Bally Walk-In Cooler Error Code EA1: External Alarm 1
EA1, External Alarm 1, on a Bally walk-in evaporator with the SmartVap+ controller means external alarm input 1 is active. The manual says it appears when AU1 IN MODE is set to EXT ALARM and the digital input is in an active state. Find out what is wired to that input.
Medium: the alarm reports an outside device, and the walk-in's own cooling may be unaffected.

What does Bally error code EA1 mean?
SmartVap+ has auxiliary digital inputs that can be set to different jobs. When the AU1 input is set to EXT ALARM through AU1 IN MODE, the controller treats it as a window for some other device to report trouble. If the input is in its active state, the controller raises External Alarm 1 and shows EA1. The alarm therefore says nothing about the evaporator itself: it says that whatever is wired to input 1, such as a remote contact, a leak sensor or a power-monitoring relay, has signaled. The manual lists the alarm and its trigger only. It does not say what is connected to input 1 on any given walk-in, so the first job is to find out what the installer wired there. Inputs 2 and 3 have their own alarms, EA2 and EA3.
Affected models and control systems
The SmartVap+ evaporator controller, with its on-board display or dashboard display, on Bally walk-in evaporators. It applies only where AU1 IN MODE is set to EXT ALARM.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- EA1 shows in the active alarm list
- Nothing is wrong with cooling, but the alarm light is on
- An outside device connected to the controller is also signaling
Possible causes
Listed in Bally's documentation
- AU1 IN MODE set to EXT ALARM and the digital input is in an active state
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code EA1 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- The device wired to input 1 has actually tripped, such as a remote alarm contact
- Wiring to the input shorted or opened, which reads as active
- Input set to the wrong active state for the device connected
- A contact left over from earlier work and no longer connected to anything useful
Safe checks before calling for service
- Ask who installed the walk-in or the alarm system and what is wired to external input 1.
- Check the connected device's own indicator or panel, if it has one, for an alarm of its own.
- Try Clear Alarms (CLA, press and hold) once. If EA1 returns, the input is still active.
- Note the room temperature and tell the technician what device you found.
How a technician diagnoses error code EA1
- Read active alarms and the input mode setting for AU1.
- Identify the device wired to input 1 and check its state.
- Measure the input at the controller terminals for the active or inactive condition.
- Check the wiring for a short, an open or a wrong normally open or closed setting.
- Correct the cause or the setting, clear the alarm and confirm EA1 stays off.
- Identifying the connected device often means tracing wiring in the evaporator housing and the control panel.
- Changing the input mode alters how the controller treats the contact, and should only be done with the site's wiring plan.
How error code EA1 differs from similar codes
EA1 is tied to the AU1 input. EA2 and EA3 are the same alarm for the AU2 and AU3 inputs.

Does EA1 mean the evaporator is damaged?
No. It means the input set to EXT ALARM is active. The cause is whatever device is wired to it.
What is wired to input 1?
The manual does not say, since it depends on the installation. A technician can trace it.
Can I turn the alarm off?
Clear Alarms will clear it, but if the input is still active it will return. Changing the input mode should be left to a technician.
