Bally Walk-In Cooler Error Code EA3: External Alarm 3
EA3, External Alarm 3, on a Bally walk-in evaporator with the SmartVap+ controller means external alarm input 3 is active. The manual says it appears when AU3 IN MODE is set to EXT ALARM and the digital input is active. Find out what is wired to input 3.
Medium: the alarm reports an external signal that may point to a real condition elsewhere on the system.

What does Bally error code EA3 mean?
EA3 is the third of the three external alarms on SmartVap+. Each auxiliary input can be given a job through its mode setting. With AU3 IN MODE set to EXT ALARM, input 3 becomes a place for an outside device to say that something needs attention, and when it is in its active state the controller shows EA3. Unlike a sensor alarm, nothing the controller measures has gone wrong here. The controller is relaying a signal from outside, and the manual does not identify the device. In a walk-in that device might be a high-pressure alarm contact from the condensing unit, a refrigerant leak detector, or a building monitoring system. The first useful thing a person on site can do is trace what input 3 is connected to. The other external alarms, EA1 and EA2, work the same way on their own inputs.
Affected models and control systems
The SmartVap+ evaporator controller, with its on-board display or dashboard display, on Bally walk-in evaporators. It applies only where AU3 IN MODE is set to EXT ALARM.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- EA3 shows in the active alarm list
- The alarm light is on without any change in room temperature
- Another system, such as a building monitor, may also be signaling
Possible causes
Listed in Bally's documentation
- AU3 IN MODE set to EXT ALARM and the digital input is in an active state
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code EA3 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- The device wired to input 3, such as a leak detector or condensing unit contact, has tripped
- Cable to the third input damaged, giving a false active state
- Input set to the wrong active state for the connected contact
- Input used for an old device that no longer exists and now reads as open
Safe checks before calling for service
- Ask who installed the third external input and what it connects to, for example a leak detector or the condensing unit.
- Check the connected device's own indicator for an alarm, and look for visible signs such as a water leak.
- Try Clear Alarms (CLA, press and hold) once, then see whether EA3 returns.
- Record the room temperature and the name of the device for the service call.
How a technician diagnoses error code EA3
- Read active alarms and the AU3 input mode.
- Trace input 3 to the device it serves and read its state.
- Measure the input at the controller in the active and inactive condition.
- Check wiring, the contact type and the active-state setting.
- Correct the device, wiring or setting, clear the alarm and confirm it stays clear.
- Tracing an input may lead to the condensing unit or a panel carrying line voltage.
- A contact that signals refrigerant or safety trouble must be investigated at its source, which needs a technician.
How error code EA3 differs from similar codes
EA3 is tied to the AU3 input, and EA1 and EA2 cover inputs 1 and 2. A3A, by contrast, is a temperature sensor alarm on the same auxiliary input numbering.

Is EA3 a sensor problem?
No. EA3 relays an external input, while A3A reports the AU3 temperature sensor.
Can the device behind EA3 be the compressor side?
It could be, depending on the installation. The manual does not name the device, so a technician needs to trace it.
Will clearing help?
Clear Alarms removes active alarms, but EA3 returns if the input is still active.
Need help with Bally error code EA3?
A technician confirms the cause on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
