What does MEIKO error code ERR 212 mean?

The control watches the boiler temperature and stops heating at its setpoint. If the measured temperature rises above 95 C, it shows ERR 212, Actual boiler temperature too high (>95 C), and stops the machine, because water that hot is a scald hazard and means heating has not switched off. The manual lists two causes: a contactor that is sticking, which keeps power on to the heater, or an incorrect or defective sensor, which can make the control read wrongly. It states that it is not possible to continue working and that a service technician is to be called. The two causes behave differently: a stuck contactor means the water really is too hot, while a bad sensor can show a high reading when it is not. The display reads Actual boiler temperature too high (>95 C).

Possible causes

Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code ERR 212 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Contactor sticking
  • Sensor incorrect or defective
  • Heater element or its wiring shorted so heat cannot be switched off
  • Scale insulating the sensor so it reads differently from the water
  • Sensor shifted out of its proper position

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Switch the machine off at its switch and keep clear of steam or hot water.
  2. Let the machine cool before anyone touches it or opens the door.
  3. Do not try to run another cycle until a technician has checked it.
  4. Note when ERR 212 appeared and whether the heater seemed to run on after the cycle, for the service call.

How a technician diagnoses error code ERR 212

  1. Isolate power and let the boiler cool before opening anything.
  2. Check the heating contactor for sticking or burned contacts.
  3. Compare the sensor reading with a reference thermometer in the boiler.
  4. Check the sensor position and wiring.
  5. Check the heater element for leakage to ground.
  6. Replace the contactor or sensor that fails and run a heat-up while watching the reading.
! Leave this to a technician
  • An overheated boiler holds scalding water and steam under pressure.
  • A stuck contactor means power may still reach the heater, which is a live 208-240 V hazard.
  • Telling a bad sensor from a stuck contactor needs a meter and a reference thermometer.
