Dexter Washer Error Code F13: Drive Not Communicating

F13 means the drive and the washer computer are not communicating. A technician checks whether the data cable between the controller and the drive is unplugged or pulled sideways, replaces the cable if needed and inspects the connections on the PCB and the drive.

Medium · inspection needed

High: with the drive link lost, the washer cannot run the motor.

Applies to
Dexter T-450 SWD Express stack washer-dryer, serial 481983 and up; the same F10-F21 table is in the WCAD-Series vended washers manual (8533-073-001 11/11)

What does Dexter error code F13 mean?

The controller and the drive trade messages over a data cable. If the messages stop, the controller shows F13. The manual's checks are all about that cable and its plugs: see whether it is unplugged or pulled sideways, replace the cable, and inspect the connections at the PCB and at the drive. No specific cause is given here, only the order of checks. A cable that is pulled sideways loses contact at the plug, which is why vibration can make the alarm come and go. F13 is close to F4, the washer controller communication error, and to F21, the data error with CE numbers on the drive display. F13 says the drive and the washer computer are not talking at all. When the cable and plugs are good, the board at either end becomes the suspect, but the cable is cheaper to test and far more often the cause.

Affected models and control systems

Dexter T-450 SWD Express stack washer-dryers, serial 481983 and up. The same F10 to F21 table appears in the WCAD-Series vended washers manual (8533-073-001, 11/11). Older Dexter washers number their drive codes differently.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Switch the washer off and wait a minute.
  2. Look at whether the data cable seems pulled tight, without touching it.
  3. Do not unplug anything yourself.
  4. Tell the technician if F13 appears mostly during spin.

How a technician diagnoses error code F13

  1. Read the code and the drive code.
  2. Check whether the data cable is unplugged or pulled sideways.
  3. Replace the cable if damaged.
  4. Inspect the connections on the PCB and the drive.
  5. Replace the PCB or drive if the cable and plugs test good.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The cable plugs into live boards.
  • Connectors and pins are small and easily damaged.
  • Isolating the PCB from the drive takes test equipment.

How error code F13 differs from similar codes

F13 is the drive to computer link. F4 is a controller communication error, and F21 is a data error with CE numbers.
