Rational Combi Oven Ignition Controller Error 17: Flame Before Gas

Ignition controller error 17 on a gas SelfCookingCenter or iCombi oven means a flame current was measured one second before the gas valve opened on the top hot air burner. Shut the gas valve to the oven and tell us the number shown and when it first appeared. If you smell gas, go outside and phone the utility.

Medium · inspection needed

High: it is a critical gas error that can lock cooking and may involve gas passing a closed valve.

What does Rational Ignition controller error 17 mean?

The automatic ignition controller in a gas Rational oven watches for flame at set moments in each burner cycle. Flame current should not exist before the gas valve opens, because no gas is burning. Error 17 means a flame current was measured one second before the gas valve opened on the top hot air burner, so the controller saw a flame that should not be there. Each occurrence is counted as a critical gas error toward Service 140, and repeated ones can lock cooking. The reading suggests the flame sensor sees something it should not. The manual-based list covers a flame sensing wire or electrode carrying a false signal on the top burner, a top burner gas valve that leaks by and does not close fully, an ignition controller that misreads flame current, and a gas supply or connection problem near the top burner. The second of these is a gas safety matter, since gas passing a closed valve is a real possibility. That is why we keep the burner area closed and do not suggest repeated restarts.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to the automatic ignition controller on gas Rational SelfCookingCenter and iCombi ovens, per Technical Information TI_2220 on the new gas service messages. Electric ovens do not have this controller.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Ignition controller error 17 on the display
  • The top burner failing to start or lock out
  • A Service 140 message after repeated errors
  • Cooking blocked on the gas oven

Possible causes

Listed in Rational's documentation

  • Flame sensing wire or electrode on the top burner carrying a false signal
  • Top burner gas valve that leaks by and does not close fully
  • Ignition controller that misreads flame current on the top burner
  • Gas supply or connection problem near the top burner

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind Ignition controller error 17 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Moisture or grease on the electrode that creates a signal path to ground
  • Valve seat worn after years of cycling
  • Sensing wire insulation cracked near hot surfaces

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Shut the gas valve to the oven.
  2. If you smell gas, go outside and phone the utility. Do not use switches or phones near the oven.
  3. Avoid restarting the oven over and over.
  4. Tell us the number shown and when it first appeared. Leave the panels and the burner area as they are.

How a technician diagnoses Ignition controller error 17

  1. Read the error history and the Service 140 counter state.
  2. Confirm the gas supply, pressure and connections with the oven off.
  3. Inspect the top burner electrode, sensing wire and ceramic for damage, moisture and carbon.
  4. Test the gas valve for sealing with the proper gas test equipment.
  5. Check the ignition controller flame current signal with a meter.
  6. Replace the failed part and confirm a clean ignition sequence with a gas leak test.
! Leave this to a technician
  • A valve that leaks by is a gas leak risk, which needs gas test equipment and a trained technician.
  • The ignition controller and burner area work with high voltage and open flame.
  • Restarting a gas oven that reports a flame before ignition can mask a real safety problem.

How Ignition controller error 17 differs from similar codes

Error 17 is the top burner version. Error 37 is the bottom burner version, found on floor-standing models, and error 18 is the flame after shutoff.

Ignition controller error 17Questions about Rational Ignition controller error 17
Is error 17 a gas leak?

Not by itself, but it can point to a valve that does not close, so treat it with care and shut the gas.

Can I restart the oven?

We advise against repeated restarts because each occurrence counts toward Service 140.

What is Service 140?

It is the lockout the oven uses after enough critical gas errors.
