Rational Combi Oven Error Code 22: Top Burner Not Igniting
Ignition controller error 22 on a gas SelfCookingCenter or iCombi oven means five unsuccessful ignition attempts were made on the top hot air burner. Check that the gas valve to the oven is open. A gas smell means leaving the building and phoning the utility from outside.
High: the top burner will not light, and repeated errors lock the oven out of cooking.

What does Rational Ignition controller error 22 mean?
When a gas Rational oven calls for heat, its automatic ignition controller opens the gas valve, fires the igniter and looks for flame. If it does not see flame, it tries again. Error 22 means five such attempts failed on the top hot air burner, and the controller stopped. The burner did not light after five tries. The control tallies it as a critical gas error for Service 140, and a run of them locks the oven out of cooking. The usual reasons are on the ignition side: a worn electrode, igniter or flame sensing wire on the top burner, a gas valve that opens poorly, a controller that fails the start attempts, or a restricted gas supply. A closed gas valve or an empty supply produces the same display as a worn electrode, which is why we ask you to look at the valve first. The oven will not try again on its own once it has stopped, so a long series of restarts only adds more counts toward the lockout.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to the automatic ignition controller on gas Rational SelfCookingCenter and iCombi ovens, per Technical Information TI_2220. Error 42 is the bottom burner counterpart on floor-standing models.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Ignition controller error 22 on the display
- No heat from the top burner
- A clicking or ignition attempt with no flame
- Cooking blocked on the oven
Possible causes
Listed in Rational's documentation
- Worn electrode, igniter or flame sensing wire on the top burner
- Top burner gas valve that opens poorly
- Top burner ignition controller that fails five start attempts
- Restricted gas supply to the top burner
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind Ignition controller error 22 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Gas shut-off valve closed during cleaning or building work
- Regulator or line pressure low after other gas equipment came on
- Electrode coated with grease vapor that blocks the spark
Safe checks before calling for service
- Look at the gas valve to the oven and make sure it is open.
- A gas smell means leaving the building and phoning the utility from outside.
- Without a smell, avoid repeated restarts.
- Say whether the burner has lit at all today. Leave the panels on and the burner untouched.
How a technician diagnoses Ignition controller error 22
- Read the error log and the Service 140 count.
- Confirm gas supply, pressure and shut-off valve position.
- Inspect the top burner electrode, igniter and sensing wire.
- Observe an ignition attempt and check the spark and the valve opening.
- Test the gas valve and the controller output.
- Replace the failed part, then confirm ignition and run a leak check.
- Ignition circuits carry high voltage and sit next to an open gas path.
- Checking gas pressure and the valve takes manometer and leak-test equipment.
- Repeated lighting attempts with a restriction can build up unburned gas in the burner chamber.
How Ignition controller error 22 differs from similar codes
Error 22 is the top burner failing to light. Error 42 is the same on the bottom burner.

Is a closed gas valve enough to cause error 22?
Yes, the controller sees only that no flame appeared. Check the valve first.
How many tries does the oven make?
Five unsuccessful attempts, then it stops.
Can I relight it myself?
We advise against it. Call us and say whether the burner has lit at all today.
