Henny Penny Pressure Fryer Error Code E-1: Low or No Oil

E-1 on a Henny Penny Velocity pressure fryer fitted with the FPS feature means the vat has no oil or too little to cook safely. Let the fryer cool and compare the oil with the fill line, topping up if it is low. If E-1 returns after a restart, stop cooking and call us.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the heat is held off to protect the system and cooking stops until oil level is restored.

What does Henny Penny error code E-1 mean?

A fryer heater must never run into an empty vat. On models with the FPS feature, the control keeps checking the oil-level signal, and when that signal says there is no oil or too little, it refuses to heat and shows E-1. The control is guarding the heating system against running dry, so the fryer will not carry on as normal until the oil is back at the proper level. Staff see the code on the display and the cook cycle does not continue. The first thing to find out is whether the vat is really low: oil that did not all come back after the last filtering is a common reason. If the vat is full and E-1 still shows, the question moves to the sensing side, meaning the FPS sensing on this fryer, its wiring, or the control input that reads the oil-level signal. The display text is E-1, and only fryers fitted with FPS show it.

Affected models and control systems

Henny Penny Velocity pressure fryers PFE 500, PFE 561 and PFG 600 with the FPS feature. Fryers without FPS do not show E-1.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • E-1 on the display
  • Cook cycle will not continue
  • Oil visibly below the fill line

Possible causes

Listed in Henny Penny's documentation

  • Oil level in the vat below the fill line
  • Oil not returned to the vat after the last filtering
  • FPS sensing on this fryer or its wiring
  • Control input that reads the oil-level signal

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E-1 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A filter pan that was not fully pumped back after the last filter cycle
  • Oil carried out with product during heavy peak-hour cooking

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Let the fryer cool, then compare the oil in the vat with the fill line.
  2. Top the vat up to the proper level if it is low, as the owner's manual lists.
  3. Never drain or filter hot oil outside the maker's own filtering procedure.
  4. Switch the fryer off and on again and see whether E-1 returns.
  5. If it does, stop cooking and call us. Tell us whether the vat was full when E-1 showed.

How a technician diagnoses error code E-1

  1. Confirm E-1 on the display and check actual oil level against the fill line.
  2. Verify the FPS option is fitted and read the model and control details.
  3. Inspect the FPS sensing device and its connector for oil and wear.
  4. Check continuity of the sensor wiring with power removed.
  5. Test the control input reading with the sensor connected.
  6. Replace the sensor or wiring only after the vat is confirmed full and the reading is still wrong.
! Leave this to a technician
  • A full vat that still shows E-1 points at the sensing side, and that wiring is behind panels near hot surfaces.
  • The control runs on line voltage and the heaters draw large current, so tests are done with a meter by a trained technician.
  • Hot oil is a burn hazard, so checks around the vat are done only when it is cool.
