Henny Penny Pressure Fryer Error Code E-12: FPS Probe Problem
E-12 on a Henny Penny Velocity pressure fryer with the FPS feature points at the FPS probe, which the control cannot read reliably. Switch the fryer off and on once, and wait until it cools before anyone looks near the probe. If E-12 does not clear, stop cooking and call us.
Medium: normal cooking may stop, but the cause is a sensing circuit that can be tested while the fryer is cool.

What does Henny Penny error code E-12 mean?
Fryers with the FPS feature rely on a probe whose signal the control reads continuously. When that signal is missing, unstable or out of range, the control cannot trust it, so the feature the probe supports cannot do its job and the fryer may stop normal cooking. The control then shows E-12. A probe that fails completely is easy to spot, but one that fails only now and then can clear itself after a power cycle and come back later, which is why a restart helps briefly and proves little. Because the probe sits in or near the hot vat, oil and grease can reach the connector, and corrosion or loose contacts then produce the same display as a failed probe. The manual lists four places to look: the probe, its connector and wiring, oil or grease reaching the probe connection, and the matching input on the control. A fryer without FPS should not show this code, so the model label helps confirm what you have. The display text is E-12.
Affected models and control systems
Henny Penny Velocity pressure fryers such as the PFE 561 fitted with FPS. Fryers without FPS should not show E-12.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- E-12 on the display
- Cooking stops or will not start normally
- Message clears after a restart and then returns
Possible causes
Listed in Henny Penny's documentation
- FPS probe
- Probe connector and its wiring
- Oil or grease reaching the probe connection
- Matching input on the control
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E-12 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Grease creeping along the cable into the connector after repeated cleanings
- A probe cable pinched when the vat or basket was last moved
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the fryer off and then on again, as the owner's manual lists.
- Wait until the fryer has cooled before anyone inspects around the probe.
- If E-12 does not clear, stop cooking.
- Leave the wiring alone.
- Call us and tell us whether E-12 came during heat-up or mid-cook.
How a technician diagnoses error code E-12
- Confirm E-12 and verify the fryer is fitted with FPS.
- Inspect the probe and its connector for oil, corrosion and damage once cool.
- Check the probe wiring continuity with power removed.
- Measure the probe signal against specification with a meter.
- Check the matching input on the control.
- Replace the probe, harness or control only after the test points to it.
- The probe wiring runs near the hot vat, where heat and oil make contact points unreliable.
- Probe, wiring and control input give the same display, so each has to be tested in the circuit.
- A reset can hide a probe that is only intermittently failing, which needs a meter and the right probe values.
