TurboChef High-Speed Oven Error Code F3: Magnetron Current Low

F3 on a TurboChef i3, i5 or C3 oven means the microwave circuit is not drawing the expected current and the cook cycle ends. No operator fix is listed. Call Customer Support or a service technician.

Medium · inspection needed

High: microwave cooking is lost and the circuit carries lethal voltage.

What does TurboChef F3: Magnetron Current Low mean?

The microwave power comes from a magnetron fed by a transformer. The control measures the current that the circuit draws when microwaves are called for. If it is too low, the microwaves are not being produced as they should, and the control shows F3 (LOW MAG CURR or F3 MAG CURR on the C3) and ends the cook cycle. On the C3 the service manual says the magnetron transformer draws under 7 amps where about 9 amps is normal. The manual lists one cause, a defective microwave circuit, and no operator step. Microwave circuits carry high voltage that can be lethal even when the oven is off, so the work is for a technician. Food in the oven at the time may be only partly cooked, so check it before serving.

Affected models and control systems

TurboChef i3 and i5 ovens and the C3 series. Other TurboChef models are not covered by the manuals we read.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • F3, LOW MAG CURR or F3 MAG CURR on the display
  • Cook cycle ends early
  • Food cooked only by convection, not microwave
  • Little or no microwave action

Possible causes

Listed in TurboChef's documentation

  • Microwave circuit defective

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind F3: Magnetron Current Low on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Magnetron weakening with age
  • Magnetron transformer drawing less than normal
  • High-voltage capacitor or diode failing
  • Loose connection in the microwave circuit

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Do not open the oven's covers; the microwave circuit holds high voltage.
  2. Check the food that was cooking, since it may be undercooked.
  3. Switch the oven off, wait, and restart once to see if F3 returns.
  4. Do not run the oven to try the microwave again and again.
  5. Call Customer Support or a service technician and note the menu item and the time of the error.

How a technician diagnoses F3: Magnetron Current Low

  1. Read F3 and the history for how often it appears.
  2. Discharge and isolate the high-voltage circuit before touching it.
  3. Measure the magnetron transformer current against the normal value.
  4. Test the magnetron, capacitor and diode.
  5. Check the connections in the microwave circuit.
  6. Replace the failed microwave part and run a test load.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The microwave circuit holds lethal high voltage even after power-off.
  • Measuring transformer current means the oven open and powered.
  • Radiation leakage has to be checked after any microwave part is replaced.

F3: Magnetron Current LowQuestions about TurboChef F3: Magnetron Current Low
Can I cook with convection only?

The control ends the cycle on F3, so the oven should be checked before it is used.

Is F3 the same as F5?

No. F5 is the magnetron overheating, while F3 is low current in the microwave circuit.

What is the C3 normal current?

The C3 service manual gives about 9 amps for the magnetron transformer, with F3 below 7 amps.
