Merrychef High-Speed Oven Error Code E102: Heater On Without Request
E102 means the SRB detected over 1 A on the heating element circuit while the heater was supposed to be off. The manual says this is typically a short-circuited output triac, and the remedy is to replace the SRB and check related wiring. Under 1 A while heating is a different code, E116.
High: the heating circuit can energize without a request, which is a safety risk.

What does Merrychef E102: HEATER FAILED mean?
The SRB relay board switches the heating element through an electronic switch called a triac. When the oven has not asked for heat, the board expects no current in that circuit. If it measures more than 1 A anyway, it records E102: HEATER FAILED (Heater on without request). The manual's typical cause is an output triac that has short-circuited, so it stays on. Because the heater could then run uncontrolled, the oven treats it seriously. The action given is to change the SRB and check the related circuitry, loose wiring and connections, and to make sure the cabinet is clean and the cavity has no leaks. The condition should not be confused with E116, where the oven asks for heat and the current is under 1 A. That is the opposite problem, too little current rather than too much.
Affected models and control systems
Merrychef eikon e2s with the QTS touch screen and SRB relay board controller. This page is written from the e2s manual, which assigns the under 1 A condition to E116 and not to E102.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- E102 HEATER FAILED (Heater on without request)
- Cavity keeps heating when no cook was started
- The oven shuts down or refuses to start
Possible causes
Listed in Merrychef's documentation
- Output triac short-circuited
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind E102: HEATER FAILED on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Loose or burned wiring at the heater circuit on the SRB
- Grease or moisture leaking into the cabinet from a cavity seal
- A heating element lead shorted to ground
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the oven off at its normal switch and note whether the cavity still heats.
- Turn the breaker off if the oven keeps heating, and call us.
- Keep the oven clear of grease buildup and wipe the exterior while it is cool and unplugged.
- Write down whether the oven also showed E116 at any time.
How a technician diagnoses E102: HEATER FAILED
- Read the log for E102 and any E116 entries.
- With the oven isolated, inspect the heater circuit wiring and connectors at the SRB.
- Check the cabinet for grease, moisture and cavity leaks.
- Verify the heater output stays off by monitoring current in visual view.
- Replace the SRB and re-check the connections, then run a heat test.
- A heater circuit that stays live is a safety concern and carries mains voltage.
- Replacing the SRB also means moving the personality module and loading firmware.
How E102: HEATER FAILED differs from similar codes
E102 is current when it should be off; E116 is too little current when heat is requested, and E092 is its recommission test form.

Is E102 the same as E116?
No. E102 is more than 1 A with the heater off, usually a shorted triac. E116 is under 1 A when heating is requested.
Is it safe to keep using the oven?
No. A heater that can stay on without a request should be switched off at the breaker until a technician checks it.
Will cleaning fix E102?
Cleaning the cabinet helps if grease or leaks contributed, but the manual's remedy is the SRB.
