Hobart Legacy+ Mixer Error OPL / OP1: Motor Output Phase Lost
OPL and OP1 mean the motor drive on a Hobart Legacy+ HL800 or HL1400 mixer has lost one of its three output phases to the motor. Stop the mixer, make sure the guard is closed and nothing is jammed, and cycle power once. If OPL or OP1 comes back, leave the mixer off and call us.
High: a missing motor phase stops the mixer and can overheat the motor and drive if it keeps being restarted.
What does Hobart error code OPL / OP1 mean?
A three-phase motor needs all three output lines from the drive. The drive checks the output as the motor starts and runs, and when one of the three is missing it stops and shows OPL or OP1 on the SmartTimer. The mixer will not run until power is cycled and the cause is corrected. That differs from Lin, which is a missing phase on the supply side; here the break is between the drive and the motor, or in the output stage itself. A motor lead or connection that has opened, an open motor winding, a single-phase motor wired to a three-phase drive, the 1CR relay contacts, or the drive can each cause it. The code tells us a motor phase is missing, not where the break is. A mixer run on two phases can overheat the motor and the drive. The manual's list begins with the motor leads and their connections at the drive and at the motor, then relay contacts, winding resistance on all three legs, and finally the drive output stage. The display text is OPL / OP1.
Affected models and control systems
Hobart Legacy+ HL800 and HL1400 mixers with the motor drive and SmartTimer display. Lin on the same mixers concerns the input, not the output.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- OPL or OP1 on the SmartTimer display
- Mixer will not run or hums and stops
- Burning smell or heat at the motor in some cases
Possible causes
Listed in Hobart's documentation
- Motor leads and their connections at the drive and motor
- 1CR relay contacts
- Motor winding resistance on all three legs
- Drive output stage, once wiring and motor are cleared
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code OPL / OP1 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A lead that cracked where it flexes at the motor terminal box
- 1CR relay contacts burned open after many start cycles
Safe checks before calling for service
- Stop the mixer. Do not reach into the bowl or around the guard while it has power.
- Check that the bowl guard is closed and nothing is jammed in the bowl.
- Cycle power once.
- If OPL or OP1 comes back, leave the mixer off and call us.
- Tell us whether the motor hummed or was silent when the code appeared.
How a technician diagnoses error code OPL / OP1
- Read OPL or OP1 and isolate power before any inspection.
- Inspect motor leads and terminal connections at the drive and at the motor.
- Check 1CR relay contacts for continuity and wear.
- Measure winding resistance on all three legs with the leads disconnected.
- Verify the motor type is three-phase and wired to match the drive.
- Test the drive output stage last, once leads, relay and motor are cleared.
- Phase and winding checks need the right meters and safe access, so they are not owner steps.
- Motor leads and relay contacts carry 208 to 240 V, and the drive stores charge after switch-off.
- We test the motor circuit end to end and give you a written price before we replace any part.

Related Hobart mixer error codes
Is OPL the same as Lin?
No. Lin is a missing phase going into the drive; OPL is a missing phase going out to the motor.
Could the motor be bad?
Yes, an open winding is on the list, which is why we measure all three legs.
Can I keep trying?
One power cycle is fine. If it returns, leave the mixer off.
