Hobart Legacy+ Mixer Error Lin: Input Phase Lost
Lin means the motor drive on a Hobart Legacy+ HL800 or HL1400 mixer has lost one of its input phases, so it is not getting a full three-phase supply. Power the mixer down until the display goes out, bring it back, and check whether a breaker or fuse on the mixer circuit has tripped or blown. If Lin returns, leave the mixer off and call us.
High: a missing supply phase stops the mixer and can overheat the drive if it keeps being restarted.
What does Hobart error code Lin mean?
A three-phase mixer drive needs all three supply legs to be present. The drive keeps checking them, and if one leg goes missing it shows Lin, short for line, and stops. The SmartTimer shows the code as an ER number, and the mixer will not run until power is cycled and the cause is corrected. Broken input wires, loose terminal screws, or a single-phase supply on a three-phase drive can cause it, and so can a blown fuse or tripped breaker on one leg. A mixer that was working yesterday and shows Lin today often has a supply problem, not a mixer problem. One missing leg at the supply and a broken wire at the drive look the same on the display, so each leg has to be measured at the disconnect and at the drive input. The manual's list also includes the drive input stage, once the supply is cleared. The display text is Lin. Running a mixer on a missing phase can overheat the drive and motor, which is why it should stay off.
Affected models and control systems
Hobart Legacy+ HL800 and HL1400 three-phase mixers with the motor drive and SmartTimer display. Single-phase machines would not show Lin this way.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Lin on the SmartTimer display
- Mixer will not start
- A breaker or fuse on the mixer circuit tripped or blown
Possible causes
Listed in Hobart's documentation
- Input voltage missing on one leg at the disconnect
- Loose terminal screws or broken wires at the drive input
- Breaker or fuse open on one of three legs
- Drive input stage, once the supply is cleared
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Lin on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A single fuse in a fused disconnect that blew after a start-up surge
- A terminal that has loosened from vibration and heat cycling in the base
Safe checks before calling for service
- Power the mixer down until the display goes out, then bring power back.
- Check whether a breaker or fuse on the mixer circuit has tripped or blown.
- If Lin returns, leave the mixer off and call us.
- Do not touch the disconnect terminals or open the mixer.
- Tell us which breaker or fuse was open and whether other three-phase equipment also failed.
How a technician diagnoses error code Lin
- Read Lin and isolate the mixer before any inspection.
- Measure voltage on each leg at the disconnect with a meter.
- Check fuses and breaker poles on all three legs.
- Inspect terminals and wires at the drive input for looseness and heat damage.
- Restore the missing leg and verify balanced voltage under load.
- Test the drive input stage only if the supply is good and Lin persists.
- Checking each leg means measuring live 208 to 240 V three-phase terminals, which is not an owner job.
- A single missing phase can overheat the drive and motor if the mixer keeps being restarted.
- We measure each leg, then test the drive, and give a written price first.

Related Hobart mixer error codes
What does Lin mean?
One of the three power legs to the drive is missing.
Could the building be the cause?
Yes. A blown fuse or a failed contact in the supply is common.
Can I try again?
One power cycle is fine. If Lin returns, leave it off.
