BUNN Coffee Brewer Message Temp Sensor Out Of Range: Check Wire For Shorts
Temp Sensor Out Of Range, Check Wire For Shorts means the temperature probe wiring is shorted to the housing or to each other. Confirm the wires are not pinched between two surfaces or touching each other.
High: the control cannot trust the tank temperature, so heating cannot be allowed.

What does BUNN Temp Sensor Out Of Range mean?
The brewer reads the tank temperature through a two-wire probe. When the wires touch each other or the metal housing, the resistance the control sees drops far below the normal range, and the control displays Temp Sensor Out Of Range, Check Wire For Shorts. The programming manual's Troubleshooting page gives the action: confirm the wires are not pinched between two surfaces or connected to each other. The only cause listed is probe wires shorted to the housing or to each other. A pinch can happen when a cover or panel is put back after service, or when a wire is bent against a sharp edge in the tank area. An open circuit gives the other message, Check For Bad Connections. The two are close in wording but opposite in what is wrong, and the control chooses between them from the reading.
Affected models and control systems
BUNN Infusion Series bean-to-cup brewers: ITB, ITCB and HV models, and the ICB and Twin. Other BUNN brewer lines use a different message list.

Possible causes
Listed in BUNN's documentation
- Probe wire(s) shorted to housing or each other
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind Temp Sensor Out Of Range on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Insulation worn off where the wire passes a metal edge
- Cover panel pinching the wire after service
- Water at the probe terminals bridging the wires
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the brewer off and unplug it.
- Do not open the brewer or move the wires.
- Switch it on again after a minute to see whether the message returns.
- If it returns, note it and tell the technician.
How a technician diagnoses Temp Sensor Out Of Range
- Read the message and confirm it is the short circuit version.
- Inspect the probe wires for pinching or worn insulation.
- Check that the wires are not touching each other or the housing.
- Measure the probe resistance.
- Repair or replace the probe lead.
- The probe circuit connects to the live control board.
- Moving wires inside a hot brewer risks burns.
- A shorted reading can cause incorrect heating.
