Baxter Bakery Oven Error Code E27: Both Rack Limit Switches Active

E27 on a Baxter OV520 red Rack Limit Switch Error screen means both the up and down limit switches read active at once, and the motor timed out. The manual says to contact a Baxter service technician.

What does Baxter error code E27 mean?

The lift on the OV520 has an up and a down limit switch, and only one of them should ever be active at a time, because the lift cannot be at the top and the bottom together. If the control sees both active at the same moment, it cannot trust either, so it stops the motor and the Smart Touch screen turns red with E27, Rack Limit Switch Error. The manual's explanation is detecting up and down limits at the same time, motor timed out, and the action is to contact a Baxter service technician. It lists no causes. A stuck switch, a short in the wiring, or a switch carrying a wrong signal could produce this, but those are our likely causes. It differs from E25 and E26, where one switch is missing. The display reads Red screen: Rack Limit Switch Error with E27.

Affected models and control systems

This code is listed for the Baxter OV520G1 and OV520G2 (gas) and OV520E1 and OV520E2 (electric) rotating rack ovens with Smart Touch control, in Operator Manual form 36764 Rev. D.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Red screen with Rack Limit Switch Error and E27
  • Lift not moving at all
  • Motor stopping straight after starting

Possible causes

Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E27 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • One limit switch stuck closed, so it reads active all the time
  • Wiring between the two switches shorted or pinched
  • Switch input on the control reading a false signal

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Switch the oven off and do not try to move the lift by hand.
  2. Look at the rack and lift area for anything holding a switch pressed, without opening panels.
  3. Switch the oven on again once to see whether the error clears.
  4. If E27 returns, note whether the lift moved at all, for the service call.

How a technician diagnoses error code E27

  1. Read the history for E25, E26 and E27.
  2. Test each limit switch with a meter in both positions.
  3. Inspect the switch wiring for shorts, chafing and moisture.
  4. Check the control inputs for the two switches.
  5. Replace the switch, wiring or board input that fails and run full travel.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Limit switches and their wiring carry live voltage and sit near the moving lift.
  • A lift that moves unexpectedly can trap a hand or a rack.
  • Separating a stuck switch from a short or board problem needs a meter and the wiring information.
