What does Baxter error code E6 mean?

A gas oven has a rollout switch, a safety device that opens if flame rolls out of the burner area instead of going up the flue. The one on the OV520 is manual reset, so it stays tripped until it is reset by hand. When it trips, the control disables heat, turns the Smart Touch screen yellow and shows E6, Heating Error (Gas Ovens Only). The manual says the cycle can continue without heat and tells you to contact a Baxter service technician. It does not list causes for the trip. A rollout switch trips when something upsets the combustion air or exhaust path, but that explanation is ours and not the manual's. Because it protects against flame in the wrong place, it should not be reset without finding why it tripped. The display reads Yellow screen: Heating Error (Gas Ovens Only) with E6.

Affected models and control systems

This code is listed for the Baxter OV520G1 and OV520G2 (gas) and OV520E1 and OV520E2 (electric) rotating rack ovens with Smart Touch control, in Operator Manual form 36764 Rev. D.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Yellow screen with Heating Error (Gas Ovens Only) and E6
  • Gas burner not lighting or not staying lit
  • Oven cooling while the cycle continues

Possible causes

Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E6 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Blocked flue, exhaust or hood so combustion gases backed up toward the burner
  • Poor combustion air supply, for example a closed make-up air path in the bakery
  • Burner or heat exchanger problem allowing flame to roll out

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Note that heat is disabled and do not rely on the oven to bake until it is checked.
  2. Switch the oven off and let it cool.
  3. If you smell gas, leave the area and shut off the gas supply at the valve outside the oven, then call the gas company.
  4. Do not open panels or reset the switch yourself.
  5. Write down the time, what was baking and whether the hood fan was on, for the service call.

How a technician diagnoses error code E6

  1. Check for gas odor and shut off gas supply before opening the burner area.
  2. Inspect the flue, exhaust and hood for blockage.
  3. Check combustion air supply and draft.
  4. Inspect the burner, ignition and heat exchanger for damage.
  5. Test the rollout switch continuity after reset.
  6. Reset only after the cause is found, then relight and verify clean flame and normal draft.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Gas ovens carry a gas leak and carbon monoxide risk if flame rolls out.
  • Burner and flue work should be done only by a technician qualified on gas appliances.
  • Resetting a rollout switch without finding the cause is unsafe.
