Beverage-Air Refrigerator Display dEF: Defrost in Progress
DEF on a Beverage-Air cabinet with a Danfoss controller means the unit is defrosting, which is normal operation. Do nothing and keep the door shut while it defrosts, then watch that dEF disappears and the temperature display returns. Call us only if dEF stays on for hours or water collects under the unit.
Low: normal operation that ends by itself, unless it lasts for hours.

What does Beverage-Air error code DEF mean?
Refrigeration coils collect frost as the cabinet runs, and the Danfoss controller clears it on a schedule. While it does, the compressor rests, the coil warms and melts the frost, and the display shows dEF in place of the temperature. The cabinet warms slightly during this time, then cooling resumes and the temperature returns to the display. This is a normal cycle, not a problem, and nothing needs repair if the message goes away by itself. The manual's list therefore begins with nothing, if the message clears in a normal time. The remaining entries describe the abnormal cases: a defrost that does not end, a defrost that runs more often than needed, and a clogged drain after defrost that lets meltwater collect. What tells normal from abnormal is the duration and the aftermath. A dEF that clears and a cabinet that recovers its temperature are fine. A dEF that lasts for hours, or a puddle under the unit, deserves a call.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to Beverage-Air cabinets with a Danfoss controller, including current R290 models such as the UCR27AHC undercounter, the WTR48AHC worktop and the HR2HC-1S Horizon reach-in, and the matching freezers, prep tables and bar coolers. Eliwell-controlled cabinets use different codes.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- DEF replaces the temperature on the display
- The compressor is quiet for a short time
- Contents warm slightly then recover
- Water drips during the cycle
Possible causes
Listed in Beverage-Air's documentation
- Normal defrost that clears in the usual time
- A defrost that does not end
- Defrost running more often than needed
- A clogged drain after defrost
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code DEF on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A defrost heater or timer that fails to end the cycle, so dEF stays up for hours
- A defrost interval set too short for a low-traffic cabinet so it defrosts when it does not need to
- A drain line blocked with food debris so meltwater backs up after each cycle
Safe checks before calling for service
- Do nothing and keep the door shut while the unit defrosts.
- Watch that dEF disappears and the temperature display returns.
- Check that the cabinet recovers its temperature after the cycle.
- Wipe up any water under the unit.
- If dEF stays on for hours, or water collects under the unit, note the time it started and call us.
How a technician diagnoses error code DEF
- Read the display and time the defrost from start to finish.
- Check how the defrost ends, by temperature or by time.
- Check the defrost heater and the sensor.
- Check the defrost interval setting against the use of the cabinet.
- Inspect the drain line and pan for blockage.
- Correct the setting or replace the part the test shows.
- A defrost that does not end needs heater and sensor tests with a meter.
- Drain work means getting at the back of the unit.
- Defrost settings should follow the cabinet's real use.

Is dEF an error?
No, it is the defrost cycle. It ends by itself.
How long should dEF last?
Usually a short while, and the temperature display returns. Hours is too long.
Why is there water under the cabinet?
A clogged drain after defrost is on the manual's list.
