Beverage-Air Refrigerator Error Codes E01 to E04: Sensor Failure

E01, E02, E03 and E04 on a Beverage-Air cabinet with a Danfoss controller mean sensor S1, S2, S3 or S4 has failed. The control may keep the cabinet running in a fallback mode, but it cannot manage temperature or defrost fully. Write down the code, test the food with a thermometer, keep the doors closed, and call us.

What does Beverage-Air error code E01 / E02 / E03 / E04 mean?

The Danfoss controller depends on up to four sensors, called S1 to S4, to read temperatures such as the cabinet air, the coil and the condenser. Each code in the E01 / E02 / E03 / E04 group names one of them. The number after E is the sensor number, so E01 is S1 and E04 is S4. A sensor can fail by being unplugged, shorted or open. In each case the signal is out of range, the control knows it, and it shows the code. The control may keep the cabinet running in a fallback mode, so the cabinet can still cool, but it cannot manage temperature or defrost fully, and the box may drift. The manual lists a loose plug on the sensor, a cut or open wire between the sensor and the control, a failed sensor input on the controller, and moisture or ice at the sensor lead causing a short. Which sensor failed decides what is affected, which is why the exact code matters.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to Beverage-Air cabinets with a Danfoss controller, including current R290 models such as the UCR27AHC undercounter, the WTR48AHC worktop and the HR2HC-1S Horizon reach-in, and the matching freezers, prep tables and bar coolers. Eliwell-controlled cabinets use different codes.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • E01, E02, E03 or E04 shows on the display
  • The cabinet runs but the temperature drifts
  • Defrost looks irregular or frost builds
  • The display is missing a normal reading

Possible causes

Listed in Beverage-Air's documentation

  • A loose plug on the sensor named by the Beverage-Air Danfoss code
  • A cut or open wire between that sensor and the control
  • A failed sensor input on the Danfoss controller
  • Moisture or ice at the sensor lead causing a short

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E01 / E02 / E03 / E04 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A sensor lead frozen into ice at the coil and cut when frost was cleared
  • A sensor plug pulled partly out when the cabinet was moved for cleaning
  • A lead pinched under a panel that was replaced after service

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Write down the code exactly as shown.
  2. Test the food with a thermometer while the sensor is out.
  3. Keep the doors closed as much as possible.
  4. Photograph the display.
  5. Call us and tell us the code and the model number.

How a technician diagnoses error code E01 / E02 / E03 / E04

  1. Read the code and identify which sensor, S1 to S4, it names.
  2. Check the plug at the controller.
  3. Inspect the lead for cuts, pinching, moisture or ice.
  4. Measure sensor resistance against a reference temperature.
  5. Test the sensor input with a known resistor.
  6. Replace the sensor or control as the test shows.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The sensor lead runs to the coil and condenser inside the cabinet.
  • A sensor test needs a meter and a reference temperature.
  • Without the sensor, defrost and temperature control are incomplete.

How error code E01 / E02 / E03 / E04 differs from similar codes

E1 to E4 on Eliwell controllers look similar but name Pb1 to Pb4, and the numbering differs from this Danfoss group.

Does E01 mean the compressor has failed?

No. It means sensor S1 failed. The compressor may still run in a fallback mode.

Can I keep using the cabinet?

Check food by thermometer regularly. The control cannot manage temperature fully.

Which sensor is which?

The number matches: E02 is S2, E03 is S3, E04 is S4.
