Cissell OPL Dryer Error Code E AF: Airflow Switch Bouncing
E AF means the airflow switch is bouncing during the cycle, clicking open and shut instead of staying closed while air flows. That points to uneven airflow, a vibrating or sticky switch or a restricted vent. Turn the dryer off, clean the lint screen and door seal, check the outside vent, then cycle power or press Back.
Medium: the dryer stops until the switch settles, and the cause usually returns if it is not corrected.
What does Cissell error code E AF mean?
The OPL electronic control on the smaller Cissell dryers, 25 to 35 lb models such as the CT030N, relies on the airflow switch to say that the exhaust fan is moving air. The switch should close when the fan runs and stay closed. When the control sees it change state again and again during a cycle, it treats the airflow as unreliable, stops the dryer and shows E AF. You may hear a clicking sound from the cabinet just before it stops, because the switch is moving back and forth. The reasons are the same family as on the bigger dryers: lint or a crushed section of duct making the flow uneven, a pivot that sticks, loose wiring that moves with vibration, or air leaks around the blower and drum seal. Plain E AF with no number is the bouncing case. E AF1 and E AF2 describe a switch that fails to open or fails to close.
Affected models and control systems
This page covers the Cissell OPL electronic control tumble dryers, 25 to 35 lb C-prefix models. Other Cissell controls use different codes for the same issue.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- E AF appears and the dryer stops
- A clicking sound from the cabinet before the stop
- Load is damp and the heat comes on and off earlier in the cycle
Possible causes
Listed in Cissell's documentation
- Uneven exhaust flow from lint or a crushed duct
- A sticky airflow switch pivot
- Loose switch wiring that shakes with vibration
- Uneven blower speed or air leaks at the drum seal
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E AF on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A pivot with lint and dried moisture that makes the switch stick and then snap
- A vent run that sags and collects lint at its lowest point so airflow pulses
- A switch connector that has loosened from the cabinet shaking while the drum spins
Safe checks before calling for service
- Turn the dryer off and let the drum stop.
- Clean the lint screen and wipe the lint door seal.
- Look for lint, nests or a bent cover at the outside vent opening.
- Cycle power or press Back, then call us if E AF returns. Note whether you heard clicking.
How a technician diagnoses error code E AF
- Read the code and ask when in the cycle it stopped.
- Check airflow at the outlet and watch for surging.
- Inspect the switch pivot and mounting for lint or bent parts.
- Check switch wiring for movement while the dryer runs.
- Replace the switch or correct the duct only after the test shows what is causing the bounce.
- A clicking noise from inside the cabinet could come from the switch, the blower or the wiring, and only testing tells which.
- The switch and its wiring are behind panels with line voltage.
- A problem in the vent run may involve duct work outside the dryer, not just the dryer itself.
How error code E AF differs from similar codes
E AF1 and E AF2 are the stuck-open and stuck-closed cases. Plain E AF is the intermittent case. On 120 and 170 lb dryers the matching message is a flashing AF.

What is the difference between E AF and E AF1?
E AF is a bouncing switch. E AF1 is a switch that fails to open at the end of a cycle.
Can I press Back and keep going?
Yes, as the owner's manual allows, but if E AF returns, the cause is still there.
What if it only appears with big loads?
Then airflow may be the issue. Try a lighter load and tell us what you see.
