Convotherm Combi Oven Error Code E03.0: Fan Motor Protection

E03.0 on the older Convotherm OES, OEB, OGS and OGB ovens is a fan error: the motor thermal protection has tripped, or the frequency converter has a problem. Check the fuse in the building, then contact customer service.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the fan stops and the oven cannot cook until the motor protection or converter is dealt with.

What does Convotherm error code E03.0 mean?

The fan in the cooking chamber moves hot air around the food, and the control checks that the fan motor is running as it should. The motor has a thermal cutout that opens if the winding gets too hot, and a frequency converter that sets its speed. The manual's description of E03.0 names both: motor thermal protection tripped, or a problem in the frequency converter. When either happens the fan stops, the control cannot heat safely without air movement, and the oven displays E03.0. The operator step in the manual is to check the fuse in the building, since a tripped breaker or blown fuse takes power from the oven and the fan along with it. Once that is ruled out, nothing else on this code is safe for an operator to try. The motor, the cutout and the converter are all behind panels and are tested with the oven's electrics live.

Affected models and control systems

The OES, OEB, OGS and OGB combi ovens (pre-C4). We used the translated English user manual for the line, which carries no revision or part number in the text we read.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • E03.0 on the display
  • Fan inside the chamber not turning
  • Oven stops heating
  • Burning or hot motor smell near the back panel

Possible causes

Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E03.0 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Fan motor thermal protection (thermal cutout) tripped
  • Problem in the frequency converter
  • Tripped building fuse or breaker on one leg of the oven's supply
  • Fan wheel loaded with grease, making the motor run hot
  • Motor overheated after a blocked intake or a long hot run

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Turn the oven off.
  2. Check the fuse or breaker for the oven in the building panel and reset it only if it has tripped.
  3. Let the oven cool, then restart it.
  4. If E03.0 appears again, stop using the oven and contact customer service.
  5. Tell the technician whether the breaker had tripped and how long the oven had been running.

How a technician diagnoses error code E03.0

  1. Read E03.0 and the history, and note when the fan stopped.
  2. Check supply voltage on all legs at the oven.
  3. Test the motor winding and its thermal cutout.
  4. Check the frequency converter's input and output and its status indication.
  5. Inspect the fan wheel and shaft for grease or binding.
  6. Replace the motor or converter only after those tests.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The fan motor and frequency converter run on three-phase or high line voltage that is tested live behind the panels.
  • A thermal cutout that tripped once will trip again if the cause, such as a binding fan, is not found.
  • Converter work needs the oven's own parameters, which must match the model.

How error code E03.0 differs from similar codes

E04.0 is a different fan: the secondary fan in the electrical compartment.

E03.0Questions about Convotherm error code E03.0
Is E03.0 only about a blown fuse?

Checking the building fuse is the manual's operator step. The code itself points to the fan's thermal protection or the converter.

Will the thermal cutout reset itself?

It may reset after cooling, but if it keeps tripping the cause is still there.

Can I cook without the fan?

No. The oven cannot heat safely without air movement.
