Convotherm Combi Oven Error Code E33.0: Steam Generator Malfunction
E33.0 on the older Convotherm OES, OEB, OGS and OGB ovens reads Steam generator malfunction. The manual says to get customer service to test and reset the thermal cutout N7. Do not try to reset it yourself.
High: the generator's safety cutout has opened and steam stays off until service resets it.

What does Convotherm error code E33.0 mean?
The steam generator has its own thermal cutout, N7, which opens its circuit and shuts off the heating if the generator gets too hot. When that cutout has tripped, the control shows E33.0 Steam generator malfunction and keeps steam off. The manual's instruction is specific and different from most codes in this family: customer service has to test and reset N7. A cutout of this kind usually does not reset itself, and it should not simply be reset without finding out why it opened. A generator that overheated may have run short of water, may have heavy scale on its heating surface, or may have a heating control that did not switch off. Until that is understood, a reset would only invite the same thing again. Dry-heat cooking may still be possible while steam is off.
Affected models and control systems
The OES, OEB, OGS and OGB combi ovens (pre-C4). We used the translated English user manual for the line, which carries no revision or part number in the text we read.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- E33.0 Steam generator malfunction on the display
- Steam and combi programs will not start
- Generator does not heat
- Dry-heat programs may still run
Possible causes
Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E33.0 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Steam generator ran low on water and overheated
- Heavy scale on the generator heating surface
- Heating control that did not switch off
- Fill valve that did not pass enough water
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the oven off and let the steam generator cool.
- Check that the water supply tap is fully open.
- Do not try to find or reset the cutout yourself.
- Ask customer service to test and reset thermal cutout N7, as the manual says.
- Tell the technician when the last rinse or descaling was done.
How a technician diagnoses error code E33.0
- Read E33.0 and the history, and look for earlier water or steam generator sensor codes.
- Verify water supply, the fill valve and the water level control.
- Inspect the generator for scale and clean or descale.
- Test thermal cutout N7 for continuity.
- Find out why the generator overheated before resetting N7.
- Reset N7 and run a steam cycle to confirm the generator heats normally.
- A tripped cutout shows the generator overheated, and the cause has to be found before it is reset.
- The cutout and heating elements are tested with a meter at line voltage.
- Draining and descaling a hot steam generator involves scalding water and chemicals.
How error code E33.0 differs from similar codes
E13.0 reports the generator sensor reading too high, while E33.0 points to the thermal cutout N7 that has to be reset by service.

Can I reset the cutout myself?
The manual says to get customer service to test and reset N7. It protects against overheating, so it should not be reset without finding the cause.
Will the oven still cook?
Dry-heat programs may run, but steam and combi programs stay off.
Why did the generator overheat?
The manual does not say. Low water, scale or a heating control that stayed on are the usual things a technician checks.
