Dexter Washer Error Code F14: Drive Over-Current
F14 means the drive saw an over-current on the drive or motor. Turn the washer off and check that the cylinder turns freely by hand with the belt off. A technician should also check the motor leads and the braking resistor.
High: the drive stops the motor on over-current and the washer cannot finish a cycle.
What does Dexter error code F14 mean?
The variable frequency drive, or VFD, supplies power to the cylinder motor. It monitors the current, and if the current climbs above its limit it stops and the washer control shows F14. The Common Washer guide labels this alarm DRIVE OC, though the label does not appear in the T-450 table. The manual's checks start with the mechanical load: the cylinder should turn freely by hand with the belt removed, so the motor, bearings and any obstructions are checked. Next come the motor wires, which must not be shorted between leads, and the braking resistor values. The causes it lists are a binding cylinder or motor, shorted or broken motor leads and a bad braking resistor. Over-current is a protection response, so the drive is usually fine, and the load or wiring that drove the current up is the thing to find.
Affected models and control systems
Dexter T-450 SWD Express stack washer-dryers, serial 481983 and up. The same F10 to F21 table appears in the WCAD-Series vended washers manual (8533-073-001, 11/11). Older Dexter washers number their drive codes differently.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- F14 on the display
- Cylinder stops during acceleration or spin
- Motor sounds strained before the stop
Possible causes
Listed in Dexter's documentation
- Binding cylinder or motor
- Shorted or broken motor leads
- Bad braking resistor
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code F14 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Heavy or unevenly packed load
- Belt overtight after replacement
- Motor insulation breaking down with heat
Safe checks before calling for service
- Press stop and turn the washer off at its disconnect.
- Open the door and check for objects wedged between the cylinder and shell.
- Try to turn the empty cylinder by hand and feel for rubbing.
- Restart with a smaller load; if F14 returns, note when it appears.
How a technician diagnoses error code F14
- Read the code and note the VFD light code before power off.
- With the belt off, check that the cylinder and motor turn freely.
- Check motor leads for shorts between conductors.
- Measure the braking resistor value.
- Check the motor and replace the failing part.
- Motor lead and resistor tests are made on high-voltage drive circuits with stored charge.
- Removing the belt means working around the guards.
- Repeated over-current trips can damage the drive.
How error code F14 differs from similar codes
F14 is the over-current alarm in the F-code generation. The Common Washer guide numbers its drive alarms differently.

Related Dexter washer error codes
Is the VFD bad?
Probably not. Over-current usually comes from the load or wiring.
Can I run a lighter load?
Yes, as a test. If it works, the load is likely the cause.
Is DRIVE OC the same?
It is the Common Washer guide's label for the same alarm.
