Dexter Washer Error Code F17: Drive Overload
F17 means the drive or motor is overloaded. Read the drive light code before powering down, then have a technician check that the motor turns freely, the wiring is tight, the braking resistor is correct and the V-belt tension is right.
High: the drive stops the motor on overload and the washer cannot finish cycles.
What does Dexter error code F17 mean?
The drive keeps track of how long the motor draws more than its rated current. A brief surge is tolerated, but a sustained high draw trips the drive and the control displays F17, which the Common Washer guide labels DRIVE OL. This differs from F14, the instant over-current. F17 is a slower overload that builds when the motor is working too hard for too long. The manual says to check the drive code before powering down, since the drive light code is lost once power is off. Then check that the motor turns freely, that the wiring has no loose connections, the braking resistor values, any damaged motor wires and the V-belt tension, which should have about 1 inch of deflection at the center. The causes it lists are a binding motor, loose wiring and belt tension.
Affected models and control systems
Dexter T-450 SWD Express stack washer-dryers, serial 481983 and up. The same F10 to F21 table appears in the WCAD-Series vended washers manual (8533-073-001, 11/11). Older Dexter washers number their drive codes differently.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- F17 on the display
- Cylinder slows or stalls during a heavy load
- Motor hot after the stop
Possible causes
Listed in Dexter's documentation
- Binding motor
- Loose wiring
- Belt tension
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code F17 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Bearing wearing and dragging the cylinder
- Consistent overloading beyond the washer's capacity
- Loose lug heating at the drive terminals
Safe checks before calling for service
- Press stop and leave the washer powered while a technician reads the drive light code, if you can wait.
- If you must, switch off and write down the lights you saw first.
- Check that the load was not above the rated capacity.
- Restart with a lighter load and note whether F17 returns.
How a technician diagnoses error code F17
- Read the drive light code before powering down.
- Check that the motor and cylinder turn freely.
- Inspect the wiring for loose connections and damaged motor wires.
- Measure the braking resistor values.
- Check the V-belt for about 1 inch of deflection at the center.
- Drive and motor circuits are high-voltage and store charge.
- Belt tension adjustment involves guarded moving parts.
- The drive light code is lost when power is cut.
How error code F17 differs from similar codes
F17 is a sustained overload. F14 is the instant over-current alarm.

Related Dexter washer error codes
Why does the manual want the light code first?
The drive remembers the cause only while powered. Turning off erases it.
How tight should the belt be?
About 1 inch of deflection at the center.
Is a lighter load a fix?
It helps as a test. The motor and belt still need checking if F17 returns.
