Henny Penny OFG-391 Fryer Error Code E-46: EEPROM Write Error
E-46 means an EEPROM memory write error. Turn the switch off, then on. If it persists, re-initialize the control as described in the Programming section, and if it still persists, replace the control panel.
Medium: the control cannot save settings, but no safety limit is involved.

What does Henny Penny error code E-46 mean?
An EEPROM is the memory chip where the control stores settings so they survive a power cut. When the control tries to save a setting and the write does not succeed, it shows E-46. The manual's action is in three steps: turn the switch off, then on; if it persists, re-initialize the control, following the Programming section; and if it still persists, replace the control panel. Re-initializing can rewrite the memory, but a chip that can no longer hold data will fail again. The message may follow a power dip at the moment of saving. It is different from E-41, where the stored programming itself is not valid, and from E-47, which concerns the analog converter chip. Cooks see the message after changing a setting or at power-up, and the settings may not stick. Because the chip is on the control board, a technician decides between re-initializing and replacing the panel from how the message behaves after the reset, and a message that returns straight away points to the panel.
Affected models and control systems
Henny Penny OFG-391 open gas fryer. The manual we used is a text viewer copy. E-46 is the EEPROM write error message on the OFG-391.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- E-46 on the controller
- Changed settings do not stay saved
- Message appears after power-up or a setting change
- Settings revert after a power cut
Possible causes
Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E-46 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- EEPROM memory write error
- Power dip while saving a setting
- Memory chip worn from many writes
- Noise on the control supply
Safe checks before calling for service
- Turn the switch off, wait a moment and turn it on.
- Write down the settings you changed.
- Do not re-initialize the control unless you know the Programming section.
- If E-46 returns, call us.
How a technician diagnoses error code E-46
- Read the code and confirm E-46.
- Turn the switch off and on.
- Re-initialize the control following the Programming section.
- Re-enter the settings and check they hold.
- Replace the control panel if it still persists.
- Re-initializing erases settings and needs them re-entered correctly.
- The control panel sits on line voltage.
- A memory chip failure cannot be repaired in place.
How error code E-46 differs from similar codes
E-46 is a memory write failure; E-41 is invalid programming. E-47 and E-48 are other internal control failures with the same reset steps, so the exact number tells the technician which circuit to suspect first.
