Henny Penny Fryer Error Code E-5: Oil Too Hot or Bad Probe Reading

E-5 on a Henny Penny Velocity pressure fryer reports oil that is too hot, or a temperature probe handing the control a wrong reading. Turn the fryer off and leave it until the oil has cooled completely, then switch the power off and on once. If E-5 comes back, do not keep cooking and call us.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the control saw an unsafe oil temperature or reading, and the fryer should stay off until tested.

What does Henny Penny error code E-5 mean?

The control compares the probe reading with the set temperature and holds the oil near it. E-5 appears when the temperature it sees is one it should never allow, and it can cut the heat. There are two quite different explanations. Either the oil really did overheat, perhaps because a contactor or relay held the heat on, or the probe is giving a false high reading. The display cannot tell us which. The oil temperature probe and the reading it gives come first, then the probe wiring and connector, then the contactors or relays that could hold the heat on, and finally the high-limit circuit that provides the backup protection. Hot oil is the safety concern, so the fryer stays off until the oil is cool and we know whether the oil or the probe is to blame. Staff see the code and the fryer stops heating normally. The display text is E-5, and it applies to models such as the PFE 561 and PFG 600.

Affected models and control systems

Henny Penny Velocity pressure fryers such as the PFE 561 and PFG 600, as described in the iControl-era online help.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • E-5 on the display
  • Fryer stops heating normally
  • Oil unusually hot, smoking, or oil fine but reading high

Possible causes

Listed in Henny Penny's documentation

  • Oil temperature probe and the reading it gives
  • Probe wiring and connector
  • Contactors or relays that could hold the heat on
  • High-limit circuit

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E-5 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A probe that reads high only at frying temperature, so it tests fine when the oil is cool
  • A heat control output that stays on past setpoint after a relay sticks

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Turn the fryer off and leave it until the oil has cooled completely.
  2. Switch the power off and then on again, as the owner's manual lists.
  3. If E-5 comes back, do not keep cooking.
  4. Never drain or filter hot oil outside the maker's own filtering procedure.
  5. Call us and tell us whether the oil looked or smelled overheated.

How a technician diagnoses error code E-5

  1. Confirm E-5 and allow the oil to cool before inspection.
  2. Compare the probe reading with a trusted thermometer in cool oil.
  3. Check probe wiring and connector resistance with a meter.
  4. Test contactors and relays for sticking or welded contacts.
  5. Verify the high-limit circuit is intact.
  6. Confirm the heat shuts off properly before the fryer returns to work.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Oil above a safe temperature can cause severe burns and fire, so the fryer is checked only once everything is cool.
  • Contactors and relays carry heavy line current, so testing them is meter work by a trained technician.
  • The code can come from real overheating or from a bad reading, and we compare the probe to a known thermometer to tell them apart.

E-5Questions about Henny Penny error code E-5
Is the oil really too hot?

Not always. A bad probe reading gives the same code.

Can I restart and keep frying?

Only once the oil is cool, and a repeat of E-5 means stop.

How is E-5 different from E-10?

E-10 is the high-limit switch tripping; E-5 is the control seeing an unsafe temperature itself.
