Hoshizaki Ice Machine 3 Beeps: Freeze Timer
Three beeps on a Hoshizaki KM or KMH ice machine mean the freeze cycle exceeded the freeze timer setting on two cycles in a row. The yellow F TIMER LED lights on E boards. Reset with ALARM RESET after the cause is fixed.
High: the machine remains stopped until the cause is repaired and the alarm is reset.

- KM / KMD / KML / KMS crescent cubers, "E", "G" and "J" control boards (KM-1301 to KM-2600, KMD-460/530, KML-250 to 631, KMS-822)
What does Hoshizaki error code 3 beeps mean?
During the freeze cycle, water flows over the evaporator while refrigerant cools it, and the ice slab builds. The control limits how long a freeze may take. If the freeze exceeds the timer setting on two cycles in a row, it stops the machine and sounds three beeps, and E boards also light the yellow F TIMER LED. The manual lists nine causes: a float switch stuck closed (up), a water valve leaking by, a hot gas valve leaking by, a pump motor not pumping, a TXV not feeding properly, an LLV not opening, a low charge, a headmaster not bypassing, and an inefficient compressor. A long freeze means the evaporator is not getting cold enough or the water is not circulating correctly. Both appear as a slow ice build, which is why the freeze timer cuts in. Reset only after the cause has been found.
Affected models and control systems
KM-1301SAH/3 through KM-2500 and KMH-2000 stackable cubers with E and G control boards; the same table appears in the manual for the KMD-460/530 and KML-250 to 631 G-board models.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Three beeps and a stopped machine
- Yellow F TIMER LED on E boards
- Thin or partial ice on the evaporator
- Water running with little ice forming
Possible causes
Listed in Hoshizaki's documentation
- Float switch stuck up
- WV leaking by
- HGV leaking by
- Pump motor not pumping
- TXV not feeding properly
- LLV not opening
- Low charge
- Headmaster not bypassing
- Inefficient compressor
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code 3 beeps on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A hot ambient room that slows the freeze
- Scale on the water distribution that gives uneven ice
- A condenser clogged with dust that raises head pressure
Safe checks before calling for service
- Clean the condenser filter if the machine has one and check the room temperature.
- Look for water running with very little ice on the plate.
- Press ALARM RESET with power on only after the cause is dealt with.
- Note the model, the LED and the ambient conditions for the technician.
How a technician diagnoses error code 3 beeps
- Confirm the 3-beep alarm and the F TIMER LED on E boards.
- Check the float switch, water valve and pump for correct operation.
- Check the hot gas valve and TXV for leaking by or not feeding.
- Measure the refrigerant charge and headmaster action.
- Test the compressor and replace the failed part after measurement.
- Charge, valve and headmaster checks are on the sealed refrigerant circuit.
- Pump and valve tests involve live circuits and water.
- Nine causes share one alarm, so only measurements point to the right one.
How error code 3 beeps differs from similar codes
3 beeps is the freeze timer; 2 beeps is the harvest backup timer, with an orange H TIMER LED on E boards.

How does a freeze timer alarm differ from a harvest alarm?
The freeze timer is about a freeze cycle that runs too long. The harvest backup timer is about a harvest that runs too long.
Is a dirty condenser a cause?
The manual does not list it, but a clogged condenser is worth cleaning first.
Can I reset and run again?
Only after the cause is found. Otherwise the alarm returns.
