Hoshizaki Flaker 8 Beeps: Gear Motor Fuse or Protector

Eight beeps on a Hoshizaki F-1501M or F-2001M flaker mean the gear motor fuse or protector is open, or the CCR contacts fail to close. Turn power off, check or replace the fuse, or let the protector cool and reset. Call service if it persists.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the gear motor is protected off and the machine cannot make ice until the cause is resolved.

What does Hoshizaki error code 8 beeps mean?

The gear motor turns the auger that moves and compresses the ice. It is protected by a fuse or a thermal protector. If the fuse or protector opens, or the CCR contacts that feed the motor do not close, the control sounds eight beeps. The manual's action is to turn power off, check or replace the fuse, or let the protector cool down and reset, and call service if the trips persist. A protector that opens often points to a motor working too hard: ice jamming the auger, scale buildup, a worn bearing, or a failing motor. The manual also notes a second meaning on cubelet models marked -C, -SC and -CB only: the evaporator thermistor is below -4F (-20C) at gear motor startup. That case does not apply to the standard modular flakers named here.

Affected models and control systems

F-1501M and F-2001M J-board modular flakers; the same alarm table in the manual is marked for DCM models where it applies.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Eight beeps
  • Machine stopped with no ice production
  • Gear motor silent or humming
  • Protector tripping again shortly after reset

Possible causes

Listed in Hoshizaki's documentation

  • Gear motor fuse or protector open
  • CCR contacts fail to close

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code 8 beeps on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Ice jammed in the auger or evaporator
  • Scale buildup that raises the load on the gear motor
  • A gear motor with worn bearings that draws high current

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Turn the power off at the machine, as the manual says.
  2. Wait for the protector to cool before trying again.
  3. Do not remove covers to replace the fuse yourself.
  4. If eight beeps return, note how soon and call service.

How a technician diagnoses error code 8 beeps

  1. Confirm the alarm and which fuse or protector is open.
  2. Check the gear motor fuse and protector with power locked out.
  3. Test the CCR contacts and coil.
  4. Measure gear motor current and check the auger for jamming or scale.
  5. Replace the motor or contacts only after the measurements.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The gear motor and CCR are live line-voltage parts.
  • Measuring motor current requires panel access.
  • A repeating trip points to a mechanical load that has to be found before restart.

How error code 8 beeps differs from similar codes

8 beeps has a second meaning on cubelet models (-C, -SC, -CB) for a very cold evaporator at startup; that does not apply to the models here.

Why does the protector keep opening?
