Merrychef High-Speed Oven Error Code E103: Ambient Overheat
E103 means the temperature around the QTS and SRB control boards is above 70 C, so the boards are not being cooled enough. The manual says to clean the air filter daily, keep the oven away from heat sources, and check that the cooling fan runs freely at the right speed. Replace the fan capacitor if the fan is slow.
High: the control boards are overheating and the oven may shut down.

What does Merrychef error code E103 mean?
The SRB board has an ambient temperature sensor that reports the air around the electronics. When that air passes 70 C, the oven records E103: AMBIENT OVERHEAT. The control boards sit in an air path that the cooling fan pushes through the front filter. If the filter is blocked, a heat source sits next to the oven, or the fan is weak, the air stops carrying heat away and the boards get hot. The manual lists exactly those causes: a dirty front filter, a nearby heat source and a cooling fan problem. A fan that spins slowly is often a weak run capacitor, which the manual says to replace. Daily filter cleaning is the main preventive step. In a kitchen the air near the oven can be very warm, particularly beside fryers and grills, so the placement of the oven matters as much as the fan.
Affected models and control systems
Merrychef eikon e2s with the QTS touch screen and SRB relay board controller. Confirmed in the e2s service manual.

What you may notice
- E103 AMBIENT OVERHEAT on the display
- Oven shuts down or slows cooking while hot
- Warm air blowing weakly at the oven vents
Possible causes
Listed in Merrychef's documentation
- Dirty front filter
- Heat source nearby
- Cooling fan problem
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E103 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Cooling fan capacitor weakened so the fan turns below speed
- Vents at the back or sides blocked by boxes or a wall
- Grease-laden air from nearby cooking clogging the filter faster than the cleaning schedule
Safe checks before calling for service
- Let the oven cool, then remove and clean the front air filter.
- Check the clearances around the oven and move anything blocking the vents.
- Note whether the oven sits close to a fryer, grill or other heat source.
- Restart and listen for the cooling fan running at full speed.
How a technician diagnoses error code E103
- Read the log for board temperature at the time of E103.
- Inspect the filter and the air path for blockage.
- Run the cooling fan and check its rotation and speed.
- Test the fan capacitor and the fan supply.
- Replace the capacitor or fan as the test shows, then monitor board temperature during a long cook.
- The fan and capacitor sit inside the cabinet behind mains-voltage wiring.
- A capacitor must be discharged and tested with a meter before it is judged.
How error code E103 differs from similar codes
E103 is overheating of the board area from poor cooling; E104 is the safety thermostat circuit opening, usually from cavity or magnetron heat.

How often should the filter be cleaned?
The manual says daily. A clean filter is the simplest way to keep E103 away.
Can a slow fan cause E103?
Yes. The manual says to replace the fan capacitor if the fan runs slowly.
Will E103 go away once the oven cools?
Usually, but it returns if the cause remains. Fix the filter, clearances or fan first.
