Randell Prep Table Error Code E01: S1 Sensor Failure

E01 means the S1 sensor has failed on a Randell 8000-290 or 9000W-290 prep table with the Danfoss controller. The table may keep running, but it is not under proper control. Write down the code, check pan temperatures, and call us with the model number from the data plate.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the table keeps running but without the S1 reading, so cooling control is reduced.

What does Randell error code E01 mean?

The Danfoss controller on these Randell prep tables takes readings from several temperature sensors, named S1 to S4. S1 is the first of those inputs. The controller checks each one continuously, and if a reading is lost, it displays the matching error. When S1 is lost the display shows E01, and the owner's manual says to contact service. Without the S1 reading, the controller cannot manage the cooling and defrost cycle the normal way. The table may keep running, but it is operating on less information, and it can drift from set point without any other warning on the display. The causes listed for the sensor are a loose plug on S1, a broken wire between S1 and the Danfoss controller, a failed S1 input on the controller, and moisture or ice around the sensor lead. The code names the sensor, not the part that failed, so a new sensor is not always the answer. Sometimes the plug, the wire or the input is the cause.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to Randell 8000-290 and 9000W-290 series prep tables with the Danfoss controller, such as the 8148N-290 and 9148W-290. Carel-controlled tables use E0 and E1 for probe alarms.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • E01 on the Danfoss display
  • Pan temperatures drifting from set point
  • Unusual compressor cycling
  • Frost building where defrost is not managed

Possible causes

Listed in Randell's documentation

  • Loose plug on the S1 sensor
  • Broken wire between the S1 sensor and the Danfoss controller
  • Failed S1 input on the Danfoss controller
  • Moisture or ice around the S1 sensor lead

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E01 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Sensor lead rubbed through where it crosses a metal edge
  • Connector corroded by repeated washdowns near the well
  • Sensor tip dislodged from its mounting

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Write down E01 exactly as displayed.
  2. Take the temperature of the food in the pans.
  3. Move perishable items if the pans feel warm.
  4. Call us and give the model number from the data plate. Please do not open the compressor compartment, since this table uses a flammable refrigerant.

How a technician diagnoses error code E01

  1. Read the code and confirm S1 as the failed input.
  2. Compare pan temperature with the controller reading.
  3. Inspect the S1 sensor, its mounting and its lead for damage and moisture.
  4. Check the plug and wire run to the controller for continuity.
  5. Measure the sensor resistance against its temperature.
  6. Replace the sensor, wire or controller based on the result, and confirm E01 clears.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The S1 wiring runs through a compartment with a flammable refrigerant and line-voltage circuits.
  • Proving the sensor from the input needs a meter and a temperature reference.
  • Replacing the wrong part leaves the table without control, so the test comes first.

How error code E01 differs from similar codes

E01 to E04 name sensors S1 to S4 on the Danfoss controller. Each code points to a different sensor input.

E01Questions about Randell error code E01
Can I keep running the table with E01?

It may keep cooling, but it is not under proper control. Check food temperature often until it is repaired.

Does E01 mean the sensor is bad?

Not always. The plug, wire or controller input can cause it too.

Will it clear itself?

A moisture-related problem might, but a broken wire will not.
