Randell Prep Table Error Code HI / Hi: High Temperature Alarm

HI on the Carel controller, or Hi on the Danfoss, is the high temperature alarm on Randell 8000-290 and 9000W-290 prep tables. Check pan temperature with a food thermometer right away and move perishable food to another cooler if it is warm. Call us if the alarm does not clear after the cabinet recovers.

Medium · inspection needed

High: food in the pans may be outside the safe range while the alarm is active.

What does Randell error code HI mean?

The controller compares the cabinet temperature with a high limit, and when the cabinet stays above it, the alarm shows. It reads HI on the Carel controller and Hi on the Danfoss. The meaning is the same on both: the cabinet is warmer than its high limit, so sandwich and salad ingredients in the pans may be outside the safe range. This alarm does not name the cause, because several different things push a table over the limit. The usual ones are a door left open, a dirty condenser, a poor gasket, or a large load of warm product. A failing cooling system gives the same alarm, which is the case worth ruling out when the simple causes do not apply. The maker's list covers door and lid sealing including gaskets, condenser coil cleanliness and airflow, evaporator ice and fan operation, and the probe reading and alarm limit setting. Sorting the alarm into one of those four groups is what a service visit does.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to Randell 8000-290 and 9000W-290 series prep tables, with the Carel controller showing HI and the Danfoss controller showing Hi.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • HI or Hi on the display
  • Pans warm to the touch
  • Condensation on lids and well liner
  • A compressor running for long periods without catching up

Possible causes

Listed in Randell's documentation

  • Door and lid sealing, including gaskets
  • Dirty condenser coil or restricted airflow
  • Evaporator ice or a fan that is not running
  • Probe reading or alarm limit setting

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code HI on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Several full pans of warm product added at once during prep
  • Lids left propped open during a rush
  • Evaporator fan stopped so the cold air stays at the coil

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Check pan temperature with a food thermometer right away.
  2. Move perishable food to another cooler if it is warm.
  3. Inspect door and drawer sealing and close everything fully.
  4. Call us to schedule service if HI does not clear after the cabinet recovers, and tell us which controller the table has.

How a technician diagnoses error code HI

  1. Read the display and confirm Carel HI or Danfoss Hi.
  2. Check pan temperature with a reference thermometer against the display.
  3. Inspect gaskets, lids and door switches for leaks.
  4. Inspect the condenser coil and the fan.
  5. Check the evaporator for ice and confirm the evaporator fan runs.
  6. Verify the alarm limit and probe, then test the refrigeration system if the simple causes are ruled out.
! Leave this to a technician
  • If the cause is a failing cooling system, the work involves refrigerant and line-voltage parts in a table with a flammable refrigerant.
  • Food safety limits make correct diagnosis important, because a table that appears fixed may still be warm inside.
  • Alarm limits are set in the controller, and a wrong value can hide a real problem.

How error code HI differs from similar codes

HI and Hi are the same alarm on two controllers. Door, condenser and probe codes can appear along with it.
