Rational Combi Oven Error Code Service 28: Steam Generator Too Hot

Service 28 on a SelfCookingCenter whitefficiency means the B5 steam generator temperature went above 356 F (180 C). Switch the oven off and let the steam generator cool, since the message only clears once it falls below 230 F (110 C). Check that the supply valve is fully open, and call us if Service 28 comes back.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: steam production stops until the generator cools, and the cause may repeat.

What does Rational error code Service 28 mean?

The B5 sensor measures the temperature of the steam generator. The generator is a water-filled heater, so it should never run far above the boiling point. When B5 reads above 356 F (180 C), the control stops steam production to protect itself and shows Service 28. The message clears again once the generator falls below 230 F (110 C), and steam programs stay unavailable until then. A generator that hot usually means it ran with too little water or scale coated the heating surface so that heat could not leave. The maker's list begins with the steam generator water level and level electrode, then scale on the heating surface and the B5 sensor, the water supply and fill valve, and the heating control for the generator. A partly closed supply valve starves the fill and is the one cause you can check. Scale is the slow cause, worth considering where hard water has been used without treatment. Because the generator is very hot at the time of the message, nobody should work near the back and sides of the oven.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to the Rational SelfCookingCenter whitefficiency family, per the Original operating instructions. Other generations use different service numbers.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Service 28 on the screen
  • Steam programs unavailable
  • The back and sides of the oven very hot
  • Steam production stopping mid-cook

Possible causes

Listed in Rational's documentation

  • Steam generator water level or level electrode problem
  • Scale on the heating surface or the B5 sensor
  • Water supply or fill valve
  • Heating control for the generator

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Service 28 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Supply valve partly closed so the generator fills slowly
  • Heavy scale on the generator after a long period without descaling
  • Water filter clogged and starving the fill

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Switch the oven off and let the steam generator cool; the message only clears once it drops below 230 F.
  2. Check that the supply valve is fully open.
  3. Stay clear of the back and sides, where hot parts sit close.
  4. Restart when cool, and call us if Service 28 comes back. The steam area stays closed.

How a technician diagnoses error code Service 28

  1. Read the message and ask when the oven was last descaled.
  2. Confirm water supply and fill valve operation.
  3. Check the level electrode signal and the generator fill.
  4. Inspect the generator and B5 sensor for scale.
  5. Test the heating control and the relay that switches the generator.
  6. Descale or replace the failed part, then run a steam cycle and watch B5.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The steam generator can exceed 356 F, and opening the steam area risks severe burns.
  • The heating control works at line voltage and must be tested with a meter.
  • Scale removal uses descaling chemicals that must be rinsed out completely.

How error code Service 28 differs from similar codes

Service 28 is an over-temperature of the steam generator. Service 14 is the electrode not detecting water.
