Scotsman Ice Machine Error Code E: Controller Self-Test Failed
An E on the display of a Scotsman Prodigy ELITE cuber or Prodigy Plus flake and nugget machine means the controller failed its self test. The machine will not start normally. Press Off then On to reset, confirm the machine still has power at the breaker, leave the control box closed and call us if E returns.
High: the machine will not start normally and makes no ice until the controller problem is fixed.

What does Scotsman error code E mean?
When the controller powers up, it runs a self test of its own circuits before it lets the machine operate. If that test fails, it displays E and refuses to start normal ice making. On the ELITE the Power light blinks green as well. Staff find a unit that is dead or stuck at power-up with an E showing and no ice being made. This is not about water, freezing or harvest, because the machine never gets that far. The manual lists control board power and connections, the self-test circuits, the power supply at the machine, wiring and connectors behind the front panel, and a controller that needs replacing. A brief power dip can trigger a failed test that clears after a reset, which is why pressing Off and then On is a fair first step. If E comes back, the issue is in the supply, the wiring or the board itself, and that needs a technician with a meter and access to the control box.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to Scotsman Prodigy ELITE (MC) cubers and Prodigy Plus flake and nugget (FS/NH/NS) machines with the controller code display. Other models show different startup messages.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- E shown on the display
- Power light blinking green on the ELITE
- Machine will not start ice making
- No ice being made
Possible causes
Listed in Scotsman's documentation
- Control board power or connections are defective
- Controller self-test circuits fail
- Power supply at the machine is wrong
- Wiring or connectors behind the front panel are loose
- The controller needs replacement
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A power dip or tripped breaker that interrupted the controller during startup
- A connector shaken loose behind the panel by compressor vibration
Safe checks before calling for service
- Press and release Off, then On, to reset the control.
- Look at the breaker panel and confirm the machine still has power.
- Leave the control box closed.
- If E comes back, phone us and tell us how the panel lights are behaving.
How a technician diagnoses error code E
- Read the display and note the light pattern on the panel.
- Measure supply voltage at the machine.
- Inspect the control board connectors and wiring behind the front panel.
- Check the controller power input with a meter.
- Replace the controller only after supply and wiring are confirmed good.
- Supply voltage and controller power checks are live measurements on 208-240 V circuits.
- Replacing a controller needs the right board for the model and the setup values restored.
How error code E differs from similar codes
E means the controller itself failed its startup test. It differs from the numbered codes, which come from a running machine.

Will a reset clear E?
Sometimes, if a brief power dip caused it. If E returns, the cause is still there.
Is this a water problem?
No. The machine never reaches freezing or harvest, so water is not the cause.
What should I tell you?
Tell us what the panel lights are doing and whether the Power light is blinking green.
