Repairs this series usually needs
- Blade that does not turn from the motor, start switch or gauge-plate interlock
- Uneven slices from a dull knife or the gauge plate
- Knife that will not sharpen because the stones are worn
- Carriage that is hard to move
- Automatic stroke that fails on the B12A
The Berkel B-Series is a line of gravity-feed slicers with knives from 9 to 14 inches: the B9, B10, B12, B12A and B14. The B12A is the automatic model, and the knives are chrome-plated carbon steel. The model number is on the data plate, and it tells us the knife size.
Pull the plug before you clean or inspect the knife, and keep clear of the guarded edge. If the blade will not turn, we check the motor, the start switch and the gauge-plate interlock. A knife that will not take an edge points to worn sharpener stones. A carriage that is hard to move needs cleaning and a look at the bushings.
A B-Series slicer that has sliced for years may only need new stones, belts or bushings. We give a written price first, and we say plainly when the cost of a repair outruns the value of the slicer.

The B12A. The others in the series, the B9, B10, B12 and B14, are manual. The plate carries the exact name. The plate also shows the voltage.
Why will my knife not sharpen?
Worn sharpener stones are a common reason, and we replace them and check the knife edge. Fresh stones restore a keen, even edge on the blade.
Do chrome-plated carbon steel knives need special care?
Keep them clean and dry, and sharpen them as the owner's manual describes. A knife that cannot hold an edge may need replacing, and we can advise on that.
