Repairs this series usually needs

  1. Rinse below 180F
  2. High limit tripped and no heat
  3. Scaled elements
  4. Thermostat problems
  5. Contactor problems

The J-series are Hubbell’s electric tank booster heaters, in 16 gallon J16 models and 6 gallon compact J6 models, from the J67R and J167T to the J1636T and J1639T. The kilowatts and voltage are part of the model number, so the data plate is the first thing we ask you to read.

These boosters raise hot water to the 180F a dishmachine rinse needs. When the rinse is cool, we check the thermostat, the high limit, the elements and the contactor. Hard water leaves scale in the tank and on elements, which slows recovery.

Turn the heater off at the breaker first, before anyone checks it. We do not drain a booster tank unless the owner’s manual calls for it. The cost is agreed first, and the repair labor has a 30-day guarantee.

FAQHubbell J-Series Electric Tank Booster Heaters questions
How do I read a J-series model number?

The kilowatts and voltage are in the number, so the data plate tells us what the heater is. Read it to us when you call, and we confirm parts.

Why is my booster not heating?

A tripped high limit, a failed contactor, a bad thermostat or scaled elements are common. Power it down at the breaker before anyone looks at it, and call us.

Are older J-series boosters worth repairing?

Often yes. The cost comes first, and we say so if a repair is not worth it. Many J-series heaters have been in service for years, and the parts are simple.
