Beverage-Air Refrigerator Error Code LEA: Compressor Run-Time Alarm
LEA on a Beverage-Air cabinet with a Danfoss controller means the compressor has run without a break for longer than the control allows. The control calls it a leakage alarm because a refrigerant loss is one possible cause. Check the doors, take a thermometer reading, clear lint from the condenser area, and note how long the message has been on.
Medium: the compressor is working without rest and may not be keeping up, so food could be at risk.

What does Beverage-Air error code LEA mean?
A refrigerator compressor normally cycles on and off, and the off periods give the coil time to clear and the system time to rest. The Danfoss controller measures how long the compressor runs without stopping. When the run goes past the allowed time, the cabinet is working hard and may not be keeping up, so the controller shows LEA. The control calls it a leakage alarm because refrigerant loss is one possible reason a system can never reach its set point, but that is only one entry on the list. The manual also lists frequent door openings or a leaking gasket that make the compressor run nonstop, a dirty condenser or dead condenser fan that traps heat, and an iced evaporator coil that keeps the cabinet from cooling down. Food could be at risk, so a thermometer reading tells you whether the long run is costing you cold. Cleaning the condenser area and keeping the doors shut deal with the cheapest causes first.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to Beverage-Air cabinets with a Danfoss controller, including current R290 models such as the UCR27AHC undercounter, the WTR48AHC worktop and the HR2HC-1S Horizon reach-in, and the matching freezers, prep tables and bar coolers. Eliwell-controlled cabinets use different codes.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- LEA shows and the compressor never seems to stop
- The cabinet cools slowly or not enough
- The condenser area feels very warm
- Frost on the coil or the back wall
Possible causes
Listed in Beverage-Air's documentation
- Frequent door openings or a leaking gasket that make the compressor run nonstop
- A dirty condenser or dead condenser fan that traps heat
- An iced evaporator coil that keeps the cabinet from cooling down
- A refrigerant leak leaving the system too low to cool
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code LEA on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A gasket that has lost its seal along the hinge side, letting the compressor chase warm air constantly
- A condenser blocked by cardboard or stored boxes pushed against the cabinet
- An evaporator coil that has iced because the defrost has stopped ending properly
Safe checks before calling for service
- Check that the doors are closed.
- A thermometer reading tells you whether the long run is costing you cold.
- Clear lint from the condenser area if it is easy to reach.
- Note how long the message has been on.
- If LEA stays on, call us with that time and the thermometer reading.
How a technician diagnoses error code LEA
- Read the code and watch the compressor cycling.
- Check the gaskets and door closure.
- Check the condenser, the fans and the airflow.
- Look for ice on the evaporator and check defrost.
- Check refrigerant charge with gauges if the airflow and ice checks are clear.
- Repair the confirmed cause and verify the compressor cycles off.
- Refrigerant checks need gauges and a technician trained on the refrigerant circuit.
- A compressor that runs without cooling can be damaged.
- The cause may be several things at once, so it takes measurement to separate them.

Does LEA mean there is a refrigerant leak?
Not necessarily. It is only one possible cause, and doors, condenser and ice are more common.
Can I keep using the cabinet?
Check the food temperature often, as the cabinet may not be keeping up.
Will LEA clear on its own?
It may once the compressor cycles off, but a repeat needs diagnosis.
