Beverage-Air Refrigerator Error Codes uHi / uLi: Line Voltage Alarm

UHi and uLi are the high and low line voltage alarms on Beverage-Air cabinets with a Danfoss controller. The control measures supply voltage and warns when it is outside the safe range for the compressor and fan motors. Check the plug is fully seated, make sure the cabinet is on its own circuit, and read the product temperature.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: voltage outside the safe range can stop the compressor and strain the motors.

What does Beverage-Air error code UHi / uLi mean?

The Danfoss controller measures the voltage it receives, because the compressor and fan motors are built for a certain range and suffer outside it. When the supply goes too high the control shows uHi, and when it goes too low it shows uLi, so the pair uHi / uLi covers both directions. Either way the control is telling you the problem is in the power arriving at the cabinet, not in the refrigeration system. A voltage cutout can let the box warm, so product temperature matters. The manual lists voltage at the outlet or breaker, a circuit shared with other equipment, a loose plug or worn outlet, and the voltage measurement on the control itself. The last is the least likely, so the first three come first. If the alarm repeats, an electrician may need to look at the building supply, in addition to our visit.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to Beverage-Air cabinets with a Danfoss controller, such as the UCRF48AHC, and matching freezers, prep tables and bar coolers. Eliwell-controlled cabinets use different codes.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • UHi or uLi shows on the display
  • The compressor stops and starts unexpectedly
  • Lights or other equipment dip at the same time
  • The box warms after a voltage cutout

Possible causes

Listed in Beverage-Air's documentation

  • Supply voltage at the outlet or breaker outside the safe range
  • A circuit shared with other equipment pulling the voltage
  • A loose plug or worn outlet
  • Voltage measurement on the control failing

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code UHi / uLi on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A cabinet plugged into an extension cord that drops voltage under compressor start-up
  • A shared circuit where an ice machine or oven starts and pulls the voltage down
  • An outlet with worn contacts that overheat and drop the voltage at the plug

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Check that the plug is fully seated in the outlet.
  2. Make sure the cabinet is on its own circuit and not sharing with a heavy load.
  3. Read the product temperature, since a voltage cutout can let the box warm.
  4. Do not use an extension cord.
  5. If the alarm repeats, note which one shows and when, and call us.

How a technician diagnoses error code UHi / uLi

  1. Read the code and note whether it is uHi or uLi.
  2. Measure the voltage at the outlet with the cabinet idle and running.
  3. Check the plug, cord and outlet for heat marks or wear.
  4. Check what else shares the circuit.
  5. Compare the control's reading with the meter.
  6. Advise on the building supply or replace the plug or control as the test shows.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Voltage readings are taken on live electrical equipment with a meter.
  • The cause may be in the building supply, which can need an electrician.
  • Bad voltage can damage the compressor and fan motors.

UHi / uLiQuestions about Beverage-Air error code UHi / uLi
Is uHi a problem with the cabinet?

Usually not. It reports the power arriving, and the cabinet may be fine.

Can I keep the cabinet running?

Check the product temperature, since a voltage cutout can warm the box.

Do I need an electrician?

If the alarm repeats and the cabinet is on its own circuit, yes, for the building supply.
