Bunn Slush Machine TORQUE SENSOR SHORTED: Impossible Sensor Reading
TORQUE SENSOR SHORTED means the control sees an impossible reading from the torque sensor circuit. A bad reading can leave the barrel running too soft, too hard or shut down, and the message stays on until the circuit is repaired. Note the barrel, check the fill line and lid, and call us without touching the wiring.
Medium: the barrel can run too soft, too hard or stop until the circuit is repaired.

What does BUNN TORQUE SENSOR SHORTED mean?
Where TORQUE SENSOR OPEN means the signal has vanished, SHORTED means the signal has gone to an extreme the sensor could not produce in normal use. On the ULTRA-1 and ULTRA-2 the control reads the torque sensor to judge how thick the product is, and thickness decides when freezing stops. If the reading looks like a dead short, the control cannot use it and shows TORQUE SENSOR SHORTED. The maker's troubleshooting points to the sensor circuit itself. The wiring along the barrel can be pinched or chafed, a connector can be damp, the sensor can have failed, or the board input can be reading the sensor as shorted. Since thickness is judged from torque, a bad reading can leave the barrel too soft, too hard, or stopped, and the message stays on until the circuit is repaired. Product quality is the first thing operators notice, often before they read the display.
Affected models and control systems
This page covers the older Bunn ULTRA-1 and ULTRA-2 frozen drink dispensers.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- TORQUE SENSOR SHORTED shows on the display
- Product is too soft, too hard or watery in one barrel
- The barrel stops freezing while the other keeps working
Possible causes
Listed in BUNN's documentation
- Torque sensor wiring pinched or chafed through its insulation
- A torque sensor that has failed and gives an impossible reading
- A damp or damaged connector at the control
- A control board input that reads the sensor as shorted
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind TORQUE SENSOR SHORTED on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A harness squeezed by a back panel that was refitted after cleaning
- Syrup spill that has crept into the sensor connector and bridges its pins
- A sensor case cracked from heat or impact, letting moisture into its internal circuit
Safe checks before calling for service
- Note which barrel is showing the message.
- Check that product is above the minimum fill line and the lid is seated.
- Do not open the back or touch the wiring.
- Switch the machine off if the message continues, and call us with the barrel and how the product looked.
How a technician diagnoses TORQUE SENSOR SHORTED
- Read the display and confirm the barrel.
- Inspect the torque sensor wiring and connectors for pinching, wear and moisture.
- Measure sensor and wire resistance for a short and compare it with the specification.
- Test the board input with the sensor unplugged.
- Replace the sensor, harness or board only after the test shows which one has failed.
- The shorted wiring is inside the machine, behind panels, near line-voltage parts.
- Moisture damage can spread to other connectors, so a technician has to inspect more than the first one.
- A wrong torque reading can drive the barrel too hard and strain the auger drive.
How TORQUE SENSOR SHORTED differs from similar codes
TORQUE SENSOR OPEN means no signal. This message is the reverse, with the circuit reading as a short.

Can I keep using the machine with TORQUE SENSOR SHORTED on?
Not for long. Without a good torque signal the barrel may run too hard or too soft.
Is it the same as TEMPERATURE SENSOR SHORTED?
No. This one is about auger effort and product thickness, while the other is about barrel temperature.
Could a spill have caused this?
Yes, sticky syrup in a connector is a common cause. A technician cleans or replaces the connector after testing.
Need help with BUNN TORQUE SENSOR SHORTED?
A technician confirms the cause on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
