IPSO Washer-Extractor Error Code E SP: SPI Drive Link

E SP on an IPSO CHM495R washer-extractor is an SPI communications error: the master control cannot talk to the motor control. Switch the machine off and on and try a cycle, and tell us whether anyone worked inside the machine or moved it recently.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the drum cannot be driven while the link is down, so the machine cannot run.

What does IPSO error code E SP mean?

The master control on this washer-extractor does not run the motor itself. It sends orders to a separate motor control board over an SPI data link, which is a short wired connection. If the master cannot communicate with the motor control, the drum gets no orders and does not turn, and the display shows E SP. The manual blames a transformer plug for the motor control that is unplugged, or motor-control wiring that was connected wrong. That makes the code common after service work or a move. The operator sees a machine that will not turn the drum, though washing circuits are not part of the problem, only the link to the drive. The wiring between the master and the motor control, the motor control board itself, and any connector disturbed by recent work are the places to look. A code that appears right after a repair points back to what was touched.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to IPSO washer-extractors in the CHM495R family, 20 to 100 lb, with the front-end control in that programming manual.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • The drum does not turn and the display shows E SP
  • E SP appears right after service or moving the machine
  • Restarting brings the code straight back

Possible causes

Listed in IPSO's documentation

  • Transformer plug for the motor control unplugged
  • Wiring between master control and motor control connected wrong or loose
  • Motor control board failing
  • Connector disturbed by recent work

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E SP on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A transformer plug left disconnected after a panel was removed for cleaning
  • A ribbon or harness connector not fully seated after the machine was moved

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Switch the machine off, switch it on again and try a cycle, as the manual says.
  2. If the code comes straight back, leave the cabinet closed.
  3. Tell us whether anyone worked inside the machine or moved it recently.
  4. Call us so we can check the plug and wiring.

How a technician diagnoses error code E SP

  1. Read the code and ask about recent service or moving of the machine.
  2. With the power locked off, check that the transformer plug for the motor control is seated.
  3. Inspect the wiring between the master control and the motor control against the diagram.
  4. Restore power and confirm the link comes up.
  5. Replace the motor control board only after the plug, wiring and connectors prove sound.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The transformer and motor control sit behind panels with live 208 to 240 V and stored charge in the drive.
  • Checking the data wiring against the diagram needs the maker's wiring information.
  • A wrong connection can damage the motor control, so reconnecting parts should be done by someone who knows the diagram.

How error code E SP differs from similar codes

E SP is the data link between the master control and the motor control. E db and E FS concern balance switches and not the link.
