IPSO Washer Error Code Ed05: IGBT Overcurrent
Ed05 on an IPSO CHM495R washer-extractor is an IGBT overcurrent error, meaning the drive's power switches saw too much current and shut down. Isolate the machine at its disconnect and leave it off for at least two minutes. If Ed05 returns, stop restarting and have the motor tested for a short.
High: the drive shuts down and a short in the motor circuit can cause further damage.
What does IPSO error code Ed05 mean?
The motor drive contains power switches called IGBTs that build the motor's three-phase output. They are designed to carry a defined amount of current. If a winding shorts, a cable is damaged or the basket drags heavily, the current rises in a fraction of a second, and the drive's protection shuts the switches off before they are destroyed. The control then displays Ed05. Operators see an abrupt stop, often right at the start of a spin, when demand is highest. The manual lists power down for at least two minutes and a check that the motor is not shorted. The two-minute wait lets the drive's stored energy fall away and its protection reset. A shorted winding, damaged motor wiring, heavy drag or a damaged drive are the likely causes. Because every restart sends the same surge down the same path, it is wise not to keep trying.
Affected models and control systems
The CHM495R family of washer-extractors, 20 to 100 lb, with the front-end control.

What you may notice
- Machine stops abruptly at the start of a spin
- Ed05 on the display
- Possible tripping sound or a burnt smell from the drive
- Code returns right after power is restored
Possible causes
Listed in IPSO's documentation
- The motor's windings, tested for a short
- Drag in the basket or bearings
- The drive's power switches
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Ed05 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Insulation breakdown in the motor from heat or moisture
- A motor cable damaged where it passes the frame
- A drive output stage that has already failed
- Water getting into the motor junction box
Safe checks before calling for service
- Isolate the machine at its disconnect and leave it off for at least two minutes, as the manual says.
- Do not keep restarting if the code returns.
- Leave motor wiring alone.
- Contact us to test the motor for a short, and mention any smell or sound at the stop.
How a technician diagnoses error code Ed05
- Wait out the discharge time, then read the code history.
- Disconnect the motor leads and meter each winding and insulation to ground.
- Inspect the motor cable and junction box for damage or moisture.
- Turn the basket by hand to rule out mechanical drag.
- Test the drive output with the motor disconnected, and replace the drive only if it still trips.
- Motor and drive tests are done on circuits that can deliver a lethal shock, with the drive capacitors holding charge after power-off. A short can damage the drive again if the machine is restarted. Interpreting insulation readings takes training.

Can I reset Ed05 and carry on?
One restart after the two-minute wait is fine. If it comes back, stop, because the short may still be there.
Is Ed05 caused by an overloaded washer?
A heavy load can add drag, but a repeated Ed05 points to wiring or the motor.
How is Ed08 different?
Ed08 is a maximum-current limit. Ed05 is the power switches detecting a surge.
