IPSO Washer-Extractor Error Code E FS: Frame Balance Switch

E FS on an IPSO CHM495R washer-extractor means the control found the frame balance switch open, which signals too much frame movement from a badly unbalanced load. Switch the machine off, spread the load evenly after the lock releases, and rerun.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the spin stops to protect the frame, and a repeat with a good load needs repair.

What does IPSO error code E FS mean?

The frame of a washer-extractor moves when a load is lopsided at high speed. A frame balance switch senses that movement and opens when it goes beyond a limit. The control reads the switch during extract and, on finding it open, stops the extract and shows E FS. Staff see a shaking machine or a cycle that will not finish its spin. The manual clears the message with a power-down. A lopsided load is the common cause, such as a few heavy pieces on one side of the drum. A misadjusted switch or worn suspension can be behind repeats, and a loose wire to the switch can imitate the same condition. This differs from E db, which belongs to F-speed models and reads a separate drive balance switch at the start of a drain. If the code comes back with a well-spread load, the machine itself needs inspection before it is run again at full spin.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to IPSO washer-extractors in the CHM495R family, 20 to 100 lb, with the front-end control in that programming manual.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • The machine shakes hard and stops with E FS
  • The spin ends before it reaches full speed
  • The load sits heavily on one side

Possible causes

Listed in IPSO's documentation

  • Load size and distribution
  • Frame balance switch and its adjustment
  • Suspension condition
  • Wiring to the switch

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E FS on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Oversized items such as bedspreads that ball up and settle on one side
  • A switch that has drifted out of adjustment after repeated hard stops

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Switch the machine off to clear the message, as the manual says.
  2. Wait until the lock lets go, then spread the load evenly.
  3. Take out oversized pieces and run the cycle again.
  4. A repeat with a good load needs a visit from us; note how the machine shook.

How a technician diagnoses error code E FS

  1. Read the code and note the load and the point in the extract.
  2. Run a balanced test load and watch whether E FS returns.
  3. Check the frame balance switch adjustment and its operation.
  4. Inspect the suspension and mounting for wear and looseness with the power locked off.
  5. Test the wiring to the switch before replacing the switch.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Adjusting the switch and checking the suspension means working around a heavy frame and basket.
  • The switch circuit joins the control, which carries live 208 to 240 V.
  • Separating a bad load from a bad switch or tired suspension needs a controlled test run and measurements.

How error code E FS differs from similar codes

E FS reads the frame balance switch open. E db reads the VFD balance switch closed, on F-speed models only.

E FSQuestions about IPSO error code E FS
Does a heavy load always trigger E FS?

No, but an uneven one often does. Spread the pieces so the weight is spread around the drum.

Will the machine be damaged?

The control stops the spin to avoid that.

What if it repeats with a good load?

The switch, the suspension or the wiring needs checking.
