IPSO Washer-Extractor Error Code E LF: Leak Detected on Fill
E LF on an IPSO CHM495R washer-extractor is a water leak detection error tied to the fill valve: the level rose when no fill was commanded. Close both supply valves if the drum is filling on its own, then power the machine down.
High: water can enter the drum unchecked and cause an overflow.
What does IPSO error code E LF mean?
With no fill commanded, the water level in the drum should not rise. The control watches for exactly that, and a rise points to a fill valve passing water while closed. The result is E LF. Staff may notice the drum filling by itself or sitting fuller than programmed. Debris in a valve seat can hold it open a crack, a worn valve may not seal, and high supply pressure pushes water past a marginal seat. A level sensor that misreads can also invent a rise that is not real. Too much water risks an overflow, which is why the first step is to close the supply valves behind the machine. The matching alarm for water leaving at the drain valve is E Ld. A fill valve that leaks while closed can also trip other alarms later, since the level will be wrong at every step. Do not drain the drum by hand while the machine still has power.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to IPSO washer-extractors in the CHM495R family, 20 to 100 lb, with the front-end control in that programming manual.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- The drum fills by itself with the machine idle
- The drum is fuller than programmed at the start of a step
- E LF appears and water keeps trickling in
Possible causes
Listed in IPSO's documentation
- Fill valve leaking when closed
- Debris in the valve seats
- Supply pressure too high
- Level sensor or its tube misreading
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E LF on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A grain of scale lodged on a valve seat after a pipe repair at the building
- A pressure surge from the building supply that is too much for a worn valve
Safe checks before calling for service
- Close both supply valves if the drum is filling on its own.
- Power the machine down with clear floor around you.
- Do not try to drain the drum by hand while the machine has power.
- Ask us to test the valves, and tell us whether hot or cold seemed to be passing.
How a technician diagnoses error code E LF
- Read the code and check whether the drum level rises with the supply open and nothing commanded.
- Close the supplies and compare which valve passes water when reopened one at a time.
- With power locked off, inspect the valve seats and screens for debris.
- Check the supply pressure against the valve rating.
- Compare the level sensor reading with the real level before replacing a valve.
- An overflowing drum puts water around live 208 to 240 V parts.
- Isolating which fill valve passes water takes opening and closing supplies under pressure.
- A misreading level sensor and a leaking valve look the same until the real level is checked.
How error code E LF differs from similar codes
E LF is the level rising with no fill commanded. E Ld is the level dropping with the drain closed.

Related IPSO washer error codes
Why is the drum filling on its own?
A fill valve may be passing water while it should be closed.
Is there a risk of flooding?
Yes. That is why the first step is closing the supply valves.
Can high water pressure cause E LF?
It can, since it pushes water past a worn or dirty seat.
