Dexter Commercial Washer Error Code F1: Door Lock Error
F1 (DOOR LOCK ERROR) means the door lock signal was not received within one second after the cycle started, even after three attempts, or the door did not stay locked. Do not force the door or bypass a switch. Check that nothing is caught in the door edge, restart once, and call us if F1 returns.
High: the washer shuts down every output and will not run a cycle until the door lock is working.
What does Dexter error code F1 mean?
Before a Dexter washer spins, the controller locks the door and waits for a signal confirming it is locked. That signal must arrive within one second after the cycle starts. The controller tries three times. If the signal still does not arrive, or if the door fails to stay locked afterward, it displays F1 (DOOR LOCK ERROR), turns off the door lock solenoid and shuts down every output. The reason is plain safety: a drum that could spin with the door unlatched is dangerous. For customers it shows up as a paid cycle that never starts or stops at once. The controller only knows the lock signal is missing; it does not know why. The maker's list covers the door lock motor and solenoid, the door and lock switch wiring, door adjustment and alignment, and the VFD condition. A door that has sagged slightly on its hinges can leave the latch just out of reach, so the lock moves but the switch never closes. That is why we always test the door fit before replacing a lock.
Affected models and control systems
Dexter C-Series and T-series coin washers with a VFD, T-300 to T-1450, such as the T-350 Express, T-450 Express and T-650 Express.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- F1 (DOOR LOCK ERROR) appears at the start of a cycle
- The cycle stops almost immediately after it begins
- The lock clicks several times and then the washer gives up
- The door feels loose or does not line up with the latch
Possible causes
Listed in Dexter's documentation
- Failed door lock motor or solenoid
- Damaged door or lock switch wiring
- Door out of adjustment or alignment
- Drive in an abnormal condition
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code F1 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A latch that is worn at the tip, so the door closes but the lock switch is never reached
- Dried detergent or lint in the door latch opening that blocks the lock from seating
Safe checks before calling for service
- Do not force or pry the door, and never bypass a switch.
- Push the door shut and check the edge and gasket for anything caught.
- Power the washer down for a minute, then start a fresh cycle.
- If F1 returns, take the washer out of service and call us.
- Note whether you hear the lock click, and whether the door has been hit or slammed lately.
How a technician diagnoses error code F1
- Confirm F1 and see whether it occurs on every attempt or only sometimes.
- Watch the lock mechanism during a start: does the solenoid or motor move, and does the latch engage?
- Check the door and lock switch circuit with a meter, with power off and locked out.
- Inspect the door hinges, strike and gasket for alignment and wear.
- Check the drive condition only if the lock circuit tests good.
- Replace the lock or switch after the test, then run a full cycle to confirm it holds.
- The lock solenoid and switch circuit carry live voltage right at the door frame.
- A door lock that does not seat can let a drum spin with the door unlatched, so bypassing it is never acceptable.
- Finding whether the lock, the switch or the door fit is the cause takes a meter and a close look at alignment.

Can I jump the door switch to keep it running?
No. The lock protects people from a spinning drum, and bypassing it is not something we do.
Why does it try three times?
The controller retries the lock to rule out a one-off miss before it shuts the washer down.
Can the door be the problem if it closes normally?
Yes. A small misalignment may let it close without reaching the lock switch.
