Dexter Commercial Washer Error Code: Drive Error 1 Mismatch
DRIVE ERROR 1 means the washer size and the VFD size do not match, so the controller will not run the washer. It often follows a drive or controller replacement. Do not change anything yourself; call us with the full model number.
Medium: the washer will not run, but the cause is a match or setting problem rather than damage.
What does Dexter DRIVE ERROR 1 mean?
Dexter VFD washers are built in sizes, and each size needs a drive of matching horsepower. When the washer powers up, the controller checks that the drive it finds is the right one for the size it has been set for. If they disagree, it refuses to run and displays DRIVE ERROR 1, because a drive that is too small could overheat and one that is too large could over-speed the motor. This is a configuration check, not a failure in the usual sense. That is why the message so often shows up right after a service: a replacement drive was fitted that is correct for a different washer, or a replacement controller came with different settings. The maker lists the drive horsepower against the washer size, the harness connections, and jumper settings as the things to look at. A washer that ran for years and suddenly shows DRIVE ERROR 1 without any recent work is much less common, and it points to a harness or connection problem instead of a mismatch.
Affected models and control systems
Dexter C-Series and T-series coin washers with a VFD, T-300 to T-1450, such as the T-650 Express.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- DRIVE ERROR 1 shows and the washer will not run
- The message appeared right after a drive or controller was replaced
- The washer powers up normally but never starts a cycle
- A restart does not change the message
Possible causes
Listed in Dexter's documentation
- Drive horsepower that does not match the washer size
- Loose or wrong harness connections
- Drive or controller replaced with a mismatched part
- Jumper settings that do not fit the washer
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind DRIVE ERROR 1 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A drive taken from a different size washer and installed as a spare
- A controller swapped without the size setting being matched to the washer
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the washer off for a minute and on again.
- Note any recent drive, controller or harness work and who did it.
- Do not change anything yourself.
- Call us to schedule service and give us the full model number.
- Have the washer's data plate readable, because the horsepower and size on it decide the match.
How a technician diagnoses DRIVE ERROR 1
- Read the model and serial number from the data plate and note the washer size.
- Read the drive's horsepower rating and compare it with the size the washer requires.
- Check the controller setting or jumper that tells it which size it is.
- Inspect the harness connections between controller and drive for loose or swapped plugs.
- Correct the setting or fit the right drive, then run a test cycle to confirm the message is gone.
- Choosing the right drive horsepower for a washer size takes the exact model number and the maker's parts data.
- Jumpers and harness plugs set how the controller treats the motor, so a wrong guess can run the drive incorrectly.
- The drive holds stored charge, so opening it is not safe for an operator.

Related Dexter washer error codes
Is the washer broken?
Not necessarily. The controller is refusing to run because the drive and washer size do not agree.
Can I try a restart again?
A restart will not change a mismatch. It only repeats the check.
Why did it start after a repair?
A replacement drive or controller is the most common reason for the sizes to disagree.
