Cissell OPL Dryer Error Code E AF1: Airflow Switch Fails to Open
E AF1 means the airflow switch failed to open at the end of a cycle. The switch should relax when the blower stops, and this one did not, often because of lint or a stuck switch. Switch the dryer off, clean the lint screen completely, look at the outside duct outlet, and run a short cycle.
Medium: the dryer will not run a normal heat cycle until the switch reads correctly.
What does Cissell error code E AF1 mean?
A Cissell OPL control dryer, such as the CT030N or CU030E, uses the airflow switch in two ways. While the dryer runs, the switch closes to prove air is moving. When the cycle ends and the blower stops, it should spring open again. The control checks that second part too. If the switch stays closed after the blower has stopped, the control cannot be sure it is reading the switch correctly, and it shows E AF1. The situation matters because a switch that stays closed would let the control believe air is flowing when it is not. Lint packed around the switch is the usual cause, since it holds the paddle in place. A sticky pivot, a wire that shorts the circuit or an input that reads the switch wrongly can have the same result. This is not about weak airflow, as with E AF2. It is about the switch not letting go.
Affected models and control systems
This page covers the Cissell OPL electronic control tumble dryers, 25 to 35 lb C-prefix models such as the CT030N and CU030E.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- E AF1 appears at the end of a cycle or just as a new one starts
- The dryer will not start a new heat cycle
- Lint is visible around the exhaust opening or switch area
Possible causes
Listed in Cissell's documentation
- Lint buildup on or around the airflow switch
- A clogged lint screen or duct run
- An airflow switch that sticks, or damaged wiring
- A control input that misreads the switch
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E AF1 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Wet lint that has dried on the paddle and holds it closed
- A bent paddle arm from a past cleaning that now rests against its stop
- A short between the switch wires caused by a pinched harness
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the dryer off and let the drum come to a stop.
- Clean the lint screen completely.
- Look at the exhaust duct outlet outside for lint or a blocked cover, and leave any duct work to us.
- Restore power and run a short cycle. Call us if E AF1 comes back and tell us when it appeared.
How a technician diagnoses error code E AF1
- Read the code and note whether it appears at the end of a cycle or at the next start.
- Inspect the switch and paddle for lint and movement with the blower off.
- Measure the switch at rest for an open circuit.
- Check the harness and the control input.
- Replace the switch or control only after the rest reading is shown to be wrong.
- The airflow switch sits inside the exhaust path, behind panels with line-voltage wiring.
- A switch that stays closed at rest can only be proven with a meter test.
- Running without a trustworthy airflow switch gives up a safety that keeps the burner from running with no exhaust.
How error code E AF1 differs from similar codes
E AF2 is the opposite, where the switch will not close. E AF is the bouncing case. For the 120 and 170 lb dryers the matching code is AF-1.

Related Cissell dryer error codes
Is E AF1 a vent problem?
Not directly. It means the switch will not release, which is usually lint on the switch itself.
Can I keep drying with E AF1 showing?
It is better to wait. The control cannot trust its airflow proof.
Will it clear after I clean the lint?
Often yes. If it returns, the switch or the wiring is the next thing to test.
