Cissell OPL Dryer Error Code EI01: Infrared Transmission Failure

EI01 reports an infrared transmission failure, meaning a message sent over the dryer's infrared link did not go through. The drying hardware is usually fine and drying is not affected. Switch the dryer off at the disconnect, wait a minute, switch it back on, and note which device or tool was in use when EI01 appeared.

Medium · inspection needed

Low: a communication message; drying is not affected.

What does Cissell error code EI01 mean?

The OPL control on a Cissell dryer, such as the CT025L or CU030E, has an infrared link that lets it exchange settings and data with an outside device, in the same way a television remote talks to a set. Every exchange has to be sent and acknowledged. When a transmission is started and does not go through, the control records EI01 on the display. The message belongs to the communication side of the control, not to heat, airflow or the drum. Staff may see it only when someone is trying to send a setting or read data, and a setting or data exchange may be refused. Normal drying cycles are not affected, which is why this code ranks low. The things that can interrupt an infrared message are the same as for any line-of-sight signal: a dirty or covered window on the dryer, the device being used, or the communication parts on the control board.

Affected models and control systems

This page covers the Cissell OPL electronic control tumble dryers, 25 to 35 lb C-prefix models such as the CT025L and CU030E. Other Cissell controls do not use this code.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • EI01 appears on the display, often when a device is used with the dryer
  • A setting or data exchange is refused
  • Normal drying cycles still run

Possible causes

Listed in Cissell's documentation

  • A dirty or blocked infrared window
  • A device or tool used with the dryer that sends bad data
  • A failing communication part on the control board

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code EI01 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A lint film or sticker over the infrared window on the control panel that blocks the beam
  • A handheld device with weak batteries that cannot send a full message
  • A device that is held at an angle or too far away, so the beam is broken partway

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Switch the dryer off at the disconnect, wait a minute and switch it back on.
  2. Note which device or tool was in use with the dryer when EI01 appeared.
  3. Clean the lint screen so the dryer is ready for normal use.
  4. If EI01 shows again, leave it and call us. Tell us what you were trying to send.

How a technician diagnoses error code EI01

  1. Read the code and ask what exchange was being attempted.
  2. Check the infrared window for dirt, damage or obstruction.
  3. Try the exchange again with a known good device, in line and at close range.
  4. Check the control's communication hardware and power to the control.
  5. Replace the control only after another device also fails to connect.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The infrared hardware is part of the control board, which sits behind panels with line voltage.
  • A problem in the sending device can look the same as one in the dryer, so both have to be tested.
  • Because the code does not affect drying, the visit can be planned without urgency.

How error code EI01 differs from similar codes

EI02 is a time-out, EI09 a bad check number, and EI0A a framing error, all on the same infrared link. EI01 is the plain transmission failure.

Will EI01 clear itself?
