Speed Queen Coin Washer and Dryer Error Code Err: Coin Error
Err is the coin error on coin-operated Speed Queen machines, including Quantum washers (shown as E rr), older EDC topload washers and single and stacked dryers. The control picked up a bad coin pulse, or its coin sensor is not working. Look into the coin slot and return chute for a stuck coin, try one good coin, and post an out-of-service sign if Err stays.
Medium: customers cannot start a cycle while the coin error is showing.

What does Speed Queen error code Err mean?
A coin-operated Speed Queen machine counts each coin by the pulse it makes passing the coin sensor. Err means the control picked up a bad pulse, such as a coin that jammed or a signal that did not look like a coin, or that the coin sensor is not working at all. On the older EDC control it can also point at an obstruction in the coin drop or at tampering. Customers cannot start a cycle while the code is on the display. The manual lists the coin slot and drop for jams or foreign objects, the coin sensor and wiring, signs of tampering, and the control coin input. A foreign object in the slot is the common reason, and it is something an attendant can often see without opening anything. The same word appears across Quantum frontload, Quantum topload, older EDC topload and the dryer control, so the model tells us which control is involved. Nothing is wrong with the wash or the heat, so staff should avoid prying at the coin parts.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to Quantum frontload (FLW1535C family) and Quantum topload (TLW13C family) washers, older timer-type topload washers with the EDC control (Micro-wand IIIe) and single and stacked dryers (DRY716C family). On Quantum frontload it is written E rr.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Err on the display
- Coins rejected or returned
- Cycle will not start
- Coins visible stuck in the slot
Possible causes
Listed in Speed Queen's documentation
- Coin slot or drop is jammed or has foreign objects
- Coin sensor or its wiring has failed
- Signs of tampering at the coin entry
- The control coin input has failed
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Err on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A bent or foreign coin lodged against the sensor
- Sticky residue from spilled soap or soda in the coin drop
Safe checks before calling for service
- Peek into the coin slot and return chute for a stuck coin or foreign object, without prying anything open.
- Try one good coin.
- If Err stays, post an out-of-service sign so customers do not lose coins.
- On a dryer, a gas smell means you leave and phone the gas utility from outdoors, then contact us.
How a technician diagnoses error code Err
- Read the display and confirm the control type.
- Inspect the coin slot, chute and drop for obstructions and tampering.
- Check the coin sensor and wiring continuity.
- Test the coin input on the control with a known good coin and sensor.
- Replace the sensor, harness or control only after the test, then run a paid cycle.
- The coin drop and sensor wiring sit near the control board's line-voltage circuits.
- Signs of tampering call for a careful check of the cash box area, not casual prying.
How error code Err differs from similar codes
Err is the coin error, while ALrn and Alrm are break-in alarms, and EC codes are card-reader problems.

Related Speed Queen coin & card laundry error codes
Does Err mean the machine broke?
Not necessarily. A stuck coin or foreign object in the slot is the common cause.
Why is it also on dryers?
The dryer control uses the same word for the same coin pulse problem.
Is it a tampering alarm?
On the older EDC control it can point to tampering, but most often it is a jam.
