IPSO Washer-Extractor Error Code Ed04: Rotor Will Not Turn

Ed04 on an IPSO CHM495R washer-extractor is a locked rotor error: the motor did not reach speed at startup, so the drive cut the current. Shut the machine off at its disconnect and, after the lock releases, check the drum for a wedged item with power off. Take it out of production if the basket does not turn freely by hand.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the basket cannot turn and further starts risk motor damage.

What does IPSO error code Ed04 mean?

On start-up the drive sends current to the motor and waits for the shaft to begin turning. If speed does not build as it should, the drive stops the current rather than burn the motor, and the control displays Ed04. Plant staff hear a hum or twitch and then silence, with a heavy load stuck in the drum. The manual says to power down, verify the motor mounting and look for obstructions. A wedged item, seized bearing or shifted mount can hold the rotor. In a laundry that processes mops, mats and kitchen textiles, a stray object slipping between drum and tub is not unheard of. The same code can also appear when the motor or drive is too weak to start a full batch, which is why a hand test of the basket comes before any electrical work.

Affected models and control systems

CHM495R washer-extractors, 20 to 100 lb, with the front-end control. Other controller generations use different codes.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Hum or twitch at startup, then silence
  • Ed04 on the display
  • Heavy wet batch stuck in the drum
  • Basket hard to turn by hand

Possible causes

Listed in IPSO's documentation

  • A jammed linen piece or object behind the drum
  • Motor mount bolts and alignment
  • Bearing and belt drag
  • Motor strength and drive output

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Ed04 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A mop head or tool caught between drum and tub
  • A bearing dry from lack of lubrication
  • A mounting bolt backed out so the motor shifted
  • A motor with winding damage that cannot start a full batch

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Shut off the machine at its disconnect.
  2. After the lock releases, check the drum for a wedged item with power off.
  3. Keep the machine out of production if the basket does not turn freely by hand.
  4. Book us to examine the motor and mounts, and tell us how stiff the basket felt.

How a technician diagnoses error code Ed04

  1. Read the code history and see whether Ed04 comes with every start.
  2. With the machine locked out, turn the basket by hand and check for binding.
  3. Examine bearings, belt and pulleys, and the motor mounts.
  4. Meter the motor windings and insulation to ground.
  5. Check drive output at start, and replace the motor or drive only on a failed test.
! Leave this to a technician
  • A seized drum can move unexpectedly when the lock is released. Motor and drive testing involves 208-240 V circuits. Repeated start attempts on a locked rotor can destroy the windings.

Ed04Questions about IPSO error code Ed04
Why not just try again?

A stuck rotor draws heavy current on every attempt, which can overheat the windings.

Will Ed04 clear itself?

The code resets with a power cycle, but returns if the rotor is still held.

Is Ed04 related to unbalance?

No. Unbalance is E Ub. Ed04 is a rotor that will not turn.
