IPSO Washer-Extractor Error Code Ed05: IGBT Surge
Ed05 on an IPSO CHM495R washer-extractor reports an IGBT overcurrent condition: the drive's power switches saw a surge in the motor circuit and shut down. Isolate the machine for at least two minutes, as the manual specifies, and avoid restarting repeatedly. Ask us to test the motor for a short before it is run again in production.
High: the drive shuts down and a short can damage it again if restarted.

What does IPSO error code Ed05 mean?
The drive's output stage is built from IGBT power switches that shape the current going to the motor. They tolerate normal loads, but they cannot survive a sudden surge. A short in the motor, damaged wiring or heavy drag at the basket can send current up faster than the drive can react by other means, so the protection turns the switches off. The control shows Ed05. Plant staff see a sudden stop, often as the spin begins. The manual says to power down for at least two minutes and to check that the motor is not shorted. The pause lets the drive's stored energy drain away. A shorted winding, damaged wiring, heavy drag or a damaged drive are the likely causes. With damp laundry environments and washdown water, moisture reaching motor terminals is worth including on the list.
Affected models and control systems
CHM495R washer-extractors, 20 to 100 lb, with the front-end control. Other controller generations use different codes.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Machine stops suddenly as extract begins
- Ed05 on the display
- Code returns on the next restart
- Possible burnt odor from the motor area
Possible causes
Listed in IPSO's documentation
- Motor insulation tested for a short to ground
- Basket and bearing drag
- The drive's output switches
- Damp motor terminals
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Ed05 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Washdown water that reached the motor terminal box
- A motor lead rubbed through against the frame
- Winding insulation worn after years of heat cycles
- Output switches in the drive already weakened by earlier surges
Safe checks before calling for service
- Isolate the machine for at least two minutes, as the manual specifies.
- Avoid restarting repeatedly if the code returns.
- Do not handle motor wiring.
- Ask us to test the motor for a short before the machine is run again in production.
How a technician diagnoses error code Ed05
- Wait out the discharge period and read the code history.
- Disconnect the motor leads and meter windings and insulation resistance.
- Inspect the terminal box and leads for moisture or chafing.
- Turn the basket by hand to check for drag.
- Test the drive with the motor disconnected before deciding on a replacement.
- A shorted motor circuit can arc or damage the drive again at the next restart. Drive capacitors hold charge after shutoff. Insulation tests need a proper meter and judgment of the readings.

Is one restart acceptable?
Yes, after the two-minute wait. If Ed05 returns, stop.
Could a wet floor cause Ed05?
Water reaching the motor terminals can, so mention any washdown near the machine.
Is this the same as Ed08?
No. Ed08 is the current passing its maximum. Ed05 is a surge sensed by the power switches.
