Electrolux Washer Extractor Error Code 05: NTC High Temp

Error code 05 means the NTC temperature sensor is reading above +98 C, which corresponds to a resistance below about 350 ohm. That points to a short circuit in the sensor or a damaged sensor cable. A technician should check the sensor resistance, the sensor and the cable.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the control may be reading a real overtemperature, so the program stops until the sensor is proven good.

What does Electrolux Professional error code 05 mean?

The CPU board uses the NTC sensor's resistance to track water temperature. Resistance falls as the water warms, so a very low value looks like boiling or hotter. When the reading drops below about 350 ohm, equal to more than +98 C, the board does not trust it and displays ERROR 005 / NTC HIGH TEMP rather than keep heating. Water in a laundry machine does not normally get that hot, so a genuine overheating is unlikely compared with a short in the sensor loop. The manual names a shorted sensor and a break in the sensor cable. A cable break can still cause this when the damaged conductors touch each other. The message tends to appear early in a heated program or as soon as the machine is powered up.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to the W465H-W4300H, W475S-W4330S and W475N-W4330N washer-extractors, Type W3..., with the Compass Control. The limits quoted are for the NTC sensor used in these machines.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Display shows ERROR 005 / NTC HIGH TEMP
  • Heated program stops or never starts
  • Water feels normal while the control thinks it is boiling
  • Message shows soon after the program begins

Possible causes

Listed in Electrolux Professional's documentation

  • Short circuit in the sensor
  • Break in the sensor cable

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code 05 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Cable insulation worn through where it rubs, shorting the two sensor wires
  • Water or detergent reaching the sensor plug and bridging its contacts
  • Heat damage to the sensor lead near the heating area

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Touch the supply hoses and the door glass carefully to see whether the water is actually hot. If it is truly very hot, stop the machine and call us.
  2. Switch the control off and on once to see if the message clears.
  3. Restart a cold-water program to see if it runs, which helps narrow the problem to temperature sensing.
  4. If it persists, note the program and the stage when the message appeared, then call us.

How a technician diagnoses error code 05

  1. Read the code and check the actual water temperature to rule out real overheating.
  2. Measure the sensor resistance and compare it with the manual's table.
  3. Inspect the sensor cable along its length for abrasion and shorted conductors.
  4. Check the sensor input at the CPU board.
  5. Replace the sensor or cable only after the measurement proves it bad.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Sensor and board tests are meter work, and the board sits behind covers on a machine with line-voltage wiring.
  • A shorted cable can be hard to see and often needs to be traced along its whole run.
  • If the heating element is involved, a real overheating needs checking before the machine is used again.

How error code 05 differs from similar codes

Code 05 is the hot-side limit of the NTC sensor; code 04 is the cold-side limit, below about -9 C.

Error code 05Questions about Electrolux Professional error code 05
Is the water actually boiling?

Almost never. A reading above +98 C usually means the sensor has shorted, not that the water is that hot.

Why is this marked high?

If the reading were real, the heater would be overdriving. The control stops the program to protect the machine until the sensor is proven good.

Can I run only cold programs?

Possibly, but the control may still refuse them while it distrusts the sensor.
