Randell Prep Table Error Code E0: Control Probe Alarm

E0 is a control probe alarm on Randell 8000-290 and 9000W-290 prep tables with the Carel controller. Read the food temperature with a thermometer, move perishable items if the pans feel warm, and keep the lids closed. Call us to schedule service.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the table may run without proper temperature control, so food temperature has to be watched.

What does Randell error code E0 mean?

The control probe tells the Carel controller how cold the food well is, and the controller uses that number to start and stop the compressor. If the probe reading is lost, the controller has nothing to time the cooling against. The display shows E0 until a good reading returns. In the meantime the table may fall back to a fixed cycle or drift away from its set temperature, so it may run too warm or freeze the top layer of the pans. The maker lists four causes: a loose connector on the probe, a broken wire between the probe and the Carel board, a failed probe input on the controller, and water or ice around the probe lead that has caused a short. The first and last are the ones most likely to come and go, which is why E0 sometimes appears for a few minutes and then clears. A steady E0 usually means a wire or the input itself, and that takes a meter to separate from the sensor.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to Randell 8000-290 and 9000W-290 series prep tables with the Carel controller, such as the 8148N-290, 8260N-290 and 9148W-290. Danfoss-controlled tables use the E01 to E04 sensor codes instead.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • E0 on the controller display
  • Pans warmer or colder than set point
  • Compressor cycling in a pattern that does not follow food temperature
  • The code appearing and disappearing

Possible causes

Listed in Randell's documentation

  • Loose connector on the control probe
  • Broken wire between the probe and the Carel board
  • Failed control probe input on the Carel controller
  • Water or ice around the probe lead causing a short

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E0 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Probe lead nicked where it passes through the food well liner during cleaning
  • Condensation freezing around the connector after a door was left open
  • Probe knocked out of its holder by a pan

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Note the code just as the display shows it.
  2. Put a thermometer in the pans and read the food temperature.
  3. Move perishable items to another cooler if the pans feel warm.
  4. Keep the lids closed and do not open the compressor compartment, then call us and tell us the model number.

How a technician diagnoses error code E0

  1. Read the code and confirm E0 on the Carel controller.
  2. Compare the controller reading with a reference thermometer in the well.
  3. Inspect the probe, its holder and the lead for damage or moisture.
  4. Check the connector at the board for corrosion and a tight fit.
  5. Measure the probe resistance against temperature and compare it with the expected value.
  6. Replace the probe or controller only after the measurement shows which one is off.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Reaching the probe connector at the board means working in a compartment with a flammable refrigerant and line-voltage wiring.
  • A probe has to be tested against a known temperature with a meter, which is not a visual check.
  • Wrong readings can make the table freeze or warm food without a visible warning.

How error code E0 differs from similar codes

E0 is the Carel control probe code. The Carel defrost probe alarm is E1, a different sensor.

E0Questions about Randell error code E0
Is the table safe to use with E0?

Check food temperature with a thermometer often. Without a probe reading the table may not hold set point.

Why does E0 come and go?

A loose connector or moisture around the lead can break the reading for a short time.

Is E0 the same as E1?

No. E0 is the control probe, E1 is the defrost probe.
