Electrolux Washer-Dryer Error Code 74: Short Temp Output Sensor
Error code 74 means the dryer program unit found a short in the thermistor that measures air outlet temperature, or in its wiring. The manual equates it to E 04 in the Selecta II manual. A technician should follow that manual.
Medium: drying stops on a sensor problem, while washing and the machine are not endangered.

- Error code 74, SHORT TEMP OUTP. SENSOR

- Industrial laundry
- Applies to
- Compass Control dryer program unit
What does Electrolux Professional error code 74 mean?
The exhaust side of a dryer gives the control its best picture of how dry the load is, because outlet air temperature climbs as moisture leaves. A thermistor in the outlet airflow reports that temperature as a resistance. If the sensor or its wiring is shorted, the resistance reads far lower than real air could produce, and the dryer program unit shows ERROR 074 / SHORT TEMP OUTP. SENSOR rather than act on it. The manual gives no further causes. It says the code is E 04 in the Selecta II manual, and the technician is sent to that service manual. Compare it with code 73, where the inlet sensor is shorted. Here the outlet one is the culprit, so the cycle can neither heat nor end reliably. The washing part is not involved.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to the Compass Control washer-dryers WD4130 and WD4240, and the manual says the dryer codes apply only to these two. The code comes from the dryer program unit and corresponds to E 04 in the Selecta II manual.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Display shows ERROR 074 / SHORT TEMP OUTP. SENSOR
- Drying cycle stops or never starts heating
- Washing programs may still run
- Dryer end of cycle does not arrive
Possible causes
Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code 74 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Lint and moisture around the outlet sensor plug causing a short
- Harness insulation rubbed through near the exhaust path
- Sensor body crushed or deformed during an earlier repair
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the machine off and on once and try a short drying program.
- Make sure the lint filter is clean and the exhaust is not blocked.
- Do not take panels off to look for the sensor.
- Note the code and tell us it matches E 04 in the Selecta II manual.
How a technician diagnoses error code 74
- Read the code and confirm it matches E 04 in the Selecta II manual.
- Follow the Service Manual for Selecta II for E 04.
- Measure the outlet thermistor resistance at the sensor and at the board.
- Inspect the harness for a short.
- Replace the thermistor or harness after the test.
- The outlet thermistor sits in the exhaust airflow behind panels.
- A shorted harness and a shorted sensor look the same until measured.
- The technician follows the Selecta II service steps for E 04.
How error code 74 differs from similar codes
Code 74 is a shorted outlet thermistor; code 73 is the inlet one, and code 88 is an open outlet circuit.

How is it different from code 73?
Code 73 is the inlet thermistor, while code 74 is the outlet thermistor.
Is the exhaust blocked?
Not necessarily. The code says the sensor circuit is shorted.
Can the machine dry without the outlet reading?
Not reliably, because the control uses it to judge the cycle.
